subtitles for mkv movies

acegis's Photo acegis 21 Oct 2011

Hi all,

I an a new user of Clarke Tech ct9100 with the latest Open PLI image (from 19.10.2011).
The problem is I expected I can play mkv movies with srt-subtitles but it doesn't work.
When I play a movie I can select subtitles as a srt file but nothing appears on the screen.

Now I am wondering if it is a normal behaviour - I mean there is no support for subtitles?
Or maybe I should use a different way to play mkv files with subtitles?

thanks
acegis

The are a couple of issues with subtitles in mediaplayer.

Try the following:

Jump forward 5 minutes (with the 9 key)
Reselect the subtitle (srt)
see if it plays now.
Jump now back with the 7/4/1 keys.

Just go via the audioselection and select a audio channel should be enoug... gstreamer is buggy regards subtitles and within enigma2 currently this can only be solved via dirty work-a-rounds.

What it is related to?
To drivers? Image itself?
In other words - who should I ask to correct this?

(I expected my new settopbox will replace also my media player - HTPC but with no such functionality it lose 50% of worth :( )

an STB will never be a complete replacement of a HTPC...

I expected only playing movies with subtitels, nothing more... ;)

But I have update in my troubleshooting:

I discovered that the srt file is not recognized - it means - when I try to select subtitles it is shown 0 srt - previously I thought it is just info that subtitles exist.
I am pretty sure the subtitles do exist, the are downloaded using dedicated plugin, they have the same name, srt format , srt extension and utf-8 coding.
Why they are not recognized?
May it be related they are on a network share connected via smb/cifs?
Should I put movies on local harddisk?

We are already a long time busy solving this issue. There is a bug in gstreamer already there for years -and- only of dirty tricks and work-a-rounds you can get it a bit running... So please be patient and use step back/audioselection methods...

Can you please give a link to gstreamer bug report?

issue is that the appsink loses sync when it is handling sparse streams, and the stream is paused/resumed.
there's several related bug reports, this is the first one that comes up:

But I've seen better descriptions of the problem

On weekend tried clear enigma2 file again, and there was problem with subtitles after skip time, after skip forward and then rew etc ... etc ...
There in servicemp3.cpp - 25ms delay is short time, imho.
Long time ago, if i debug it, there was problem in this delay. I set here 50ms and change numbers in some conditions and have not problems with displaying srt subs from this time (besides, that playback begin on subtitle 3 (i think) always - strange, that in debug mode are displayed subtitle 1 and 2 well . But I can go back to start and subtitle one is displayed too). Displaying after skiping some time forward/back works well too.

Problem is, that if is played mkv file and are srt subs, each skip of time with 1-9 turns off subtitles (eServiceMP3::disableSubtitles) and then must be turned on manualy again.

There in InfobarGenerics.py in def __updatedInfo(self): are subs disabled after each skip with 1-9 <, > , but then are not turned on again.

There are races in servicemp3.cpp.... first those need to be removed. But it is work-in-progress...

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately, it does not look like there is much activity on that problem.

I have recently bought vu+duo and I have to say I am disappointed with quality of the software :( There are many bugs and usability issues. And non-working subtitles is not the worst, the network (plain old ethernet) can go down like every 5min on active torrent download.

Can you please tell me if there is some official bug tracker (perhaps separate for general and vu+-specific issues)? So far I could not find any.

I've been using the VU+DUO since it became available, and I don't share your pessimism.

I totally depend on a working network connection, to access my cards in another box, and to access the NAS for recording, playpack, music and pictures. And I can't recall it ever going down. You might have a local issue.

We don't have a bug tracker, as we don't have the project organisation to work with it.

I am not the only one having issues with network. Here is one of the reports about it in German http://www.vuplus-su...?threadid=20635. I assure you, this is not my local issue.

I am not sure what you mean by project organization and how it is a requirement for having a bug tracker. In my experience, it is pretty common for an open source project to have a bug tracker.

I know that OpenPLI is a modified version of the original firmware. And my bug reports should go to the developers of the official firmware. But I could not find any official bug tracker.

I have tried several firmwares so far. And most of them have nothing more than a forum (sometimes only in German). For now I am using OpenPLI because it looks like the most decent project of all custom firmwares (there is site, wiki, some developer info and even nightly builds).

BTW the Development page (http://openpli.org/development/) talks about viewing active tickets and making bug reports. It implies there should be a bug tracker :) Alas, there is no link.

A bug tracker is only useful if you have people maintaining it, and if all developers are willing to use it.
As it stands, our developers work on what they think is important, or on what they enjoy doing.

A report like this, without any details on what this issue is, how it can be reproduced, what have you done to debug it, will fall in the category "works for me", and will not be looked at.

We had a bugtracker, but it filled rapidly with stuff that weren't bugs, or could not be fixed by us. It wasn't used, we had nobody to manage it (it would have taken someone a few hours a day to do it properly), so we closed it. For now, the forum can be used to report something, and if reported property, someone will reply.

OpenPLi is based on the GPL fork of Enigma2. There is no official maintainer of that version, and Dream Multimedia has dropped Enigma2, and started with Enigma3, which is not publicly available, and will only run on original DMM hardware.

seems a serious problem ! even with MP4 embedded subs (not bitmap) and there is no detection of subs track player simply ignore it ! but with separated file it's detected but very buggy

Thank you for details.

My post was not meant as a bug report. It was just an example of bugs both in kernel and user space.

I have read something about enigma3, but I did not know that would be closed. Sigh. AFAIK vu+ is now focused on vu+ultimo which would be based on xbmc. And it would not be available on vu+duo. Right?

Don't know what VU+ is up to. I'm not sure xmbc is a good idea on an STB... But time will telll...

[OT]nope, ultimo will have enigma2 (or whatever it'll be called ;)) on board, the next 'concept' box reportedly is to be powered by xbmc[/OT]
