Enigma operates completely in Unicode (UTF-8) mode. It has no preferrence or knowledge of special "balcan" or any other (e.g. Chinese, Arabic) characters. If you take care that the srt is in UTF-8 encoding, it will just work. But srt files are often encoded in one of the dreaded Microsoft "code pages". That's not enigma's fault, enigma is not Microsoft, it adheres to open standards.

Only solution is to convert your srt files to UTF-8 yourself.

I use Mediaplayer2 and Subssupport with external subtitle. No need to utf8 encoding

Well yes , but for other language subs like French to have them perfect UTF-8 failes also . I do not know if it possible but can another ascii code chart be used in function off language but some of the isoxxxx languages code charts.

It's for letters like é è l'aigle être and à ç which are giving strange results in subtitles provided like for example on srg Switzerland. but also French channels.

Please try to use UTF-8 with BOM. Does it fails?

Use notepad++ has an option to save file as UTF8 with or without BOM.

Yes, you will need *some* sort of encoding. ASCII has no accented characters. What you think of "no encoding" is probably some Microsoft code page, which is also an encoding, but it's only valid for a very small number of languages whereas UTF-8 is valid for *all* languages (well, almost). So don't be stubborn ;)

#!/bin/bash
echo -ne '\xEF\xBB\xBF' > "$1.utf8" && iconv -f WINDOWS-1251 -t utf-8 < "$1" >> "$1.utf8" && mv "$1.utf8" "$1"

This is something that needs some TLC from us. The specification explicitly states that a BOM is not required for UTF-8 and even disencourages the use of it. UTF-8 principally does not need a BOM (because all elements are only 1 byte).

I guess the original enigma developers tried to go easy on the users and assume IEC 8859-1 (latin-1) encoding when no BOM is present or UTF-8 when it is. But it's wrong anyway because users tend to not use latin-1 but windows western instead.
