I have a file, for which linux reports:

-rw-rw-r--  1 wanwizard users 62939493888 Jul 24 21:59 myfile.tar.gz

This is 62,9GB in real bytes, and about 59G in manufacturer bytes. Given the usual bull about selling us more than there really is. will this file fit once the stick is formatted using a format Windows understands?

I hate to go out to buy one tomorrow and discover it won't fit and I have to go back for a 128GB one, as it's a 16 mile drive to the shops...

Currently in use: VU+ Duo 4K (2xFBC S2), VU+ Solo 4K (1xFBC S2), uClan Usytm 4K Pro (S2+T2), Octagon SF8008 (S2+T2), Zgemma H9.2H (S2+T2)

Due to my bad health, I will not be very active at times and may be slow to respond. I will not read the forum or PM on a regular basis.

Problem is that for some reason during a copy a 'temp' file is made that's exactly the size of the file being copied. In Windows you need 2 times the size of the file being copied. Why??? I have no clue.. I use a antiquated filemanaget that simply copies sector for sector... Extremely sliw, but it does do the job.....

Take a look at https://ipmsg.org/to...l.en#setting_io and check for i/o settings... it might do the trick.

I don't need to copy in Windows, I need to do the copy in Linux (don't use Windows myself). But I need to send the file to a Windows user, hence the file system requirement.

It is already compressed, I'm not sure what happens if I compress again (compressing a file of that size will take a while ;)).

And I can't "unpack" it first, it's a VMware OVA file, and I need to have it arrive at the other end in working order.

Nope, it is an OVA, so a package containing a complete virtual machine with all it's config definitions and all disks.

I've done a P2V project for a client of a server they found in a cupboard that was running Redhat 9, and was last updated/maintained/backupped sometime 2003. And I need to mail them the result, as internet is not an option :)

With mail you mean snail mail I expect ;) well not that I am very familiar to the subject, but a proper application data and configuration migration is not easy, so it became a conversion? Does Pedro's suggestion suffice?

Yeah. ;)

Decided to take my chances and bought a 64GB stick. It's now copying (ETA still over an hour), we'll see if it fits or not.

Thanks everyone!

It just about doesn't fit. :(

Currently trying xz with maximum compression to see if I can compress it enough so that it will fit. If not, I wasted a bit of money and I have to drive back to the shop to get a 128GB stick.

Why didn't you simply cut few GB and put then in another small usb stick?

The receiver isn't that "tech-savy", I fear than re-assembling a split file is beyond him.

Hmmm... Haven't thought of that. Will probably be a lot faster than trying to compress a gzip file. ;)

If it's a zip file, unzip it and then repack with XZ (or 7-zip or a similar lzma based program). It'll likely be considerably smaller then. Will take a lot of time though...

(e.g. "unzip < myfile.tar.gz | xz > myfile.tar.xz" or something like that)

Don't "stack" compressions, that won't work.

It's a VMware OVA file. Which is a gzip compatible archive.

Problem is that this file needs to be imported by vCenter in this format. Compare it to an ipk file if you will. If I unpack it and repack it, the receiving party will not be able to reconstruct the original OVA.

I've now zip't it (store-only, no compression), in 1GB splits. All but the last can go on the stick, the last one is small enough to burn on a CD. Problem solved.
