For those of you who wondered how it works....

The trash can

Enable/Disable

By default, the trash can is enabled. To disable it, go to:
Menu - Settings - System - Recording - Use trash can
and set the option to "no". Note that this will only affect where objects go
when you delete them, it will not remove existing items.

Delete

To delete a movie from the movie list, simply hightlight it in the list and
press the red button (or press 'menu' and select delete). If you have set the
option to be asked after playback, selecting "Stop and delete" will also move
it to the trash instead of actually deleting it.

Undelete

Open up the movie list and browse to the Trash can folder (usually at the top
of the list, with a little trashcan icon). Open this folder with OK and browse
to the item you wish to restore. Press the green button (move) and select the
folder to move it into. Once moved away from the trash can, it is 'undeleted'.

Confirmation message

The trash can never asks for confirmation since you can always undelete it if
you change your mind later. If you do get a confirmation message, this usually
means that the item could not be moved to the trash can (there will also be an
indication of the failure message). If you answer YES, the item will be
permanently deleted instead.

Empty the trash

Normally, there is no need to manually empty the trash! (This is not Windows)
You can permanently delete individual items by browsing to the trash can folder
and deleting it (again). You will get a confirmation message.
To permanently remove all items from the trash can, highlight the trash can
folder and "delete" it. You'll be asked for confirmation, and you'll get an
extra warning when recordings are in progress (the extra harddisk activity may
interfere with recording).

Time and space.

Two resources control the trash can: Time and space. The "keep items in trash
for how many days" setting controls the time aspect. The system will not purge
items until they have been in the trash for at least this many days. The default
is 8 days, just over a week. Space is more important than time. If the items are
still fresh enough, but space is running low on the harddisk, they will be
purged anyway to make room for new recordings. That is controlled by the "Keep
at least this much free space" setting, which defaults to 40 Gb, which should be
enough for quite a few HD recordings.
The trash can is emptied when preparing for recording (about a minute before
starting it) and after recordings have finished and no more recordings are
running. This accomplishes that the harddisk is not needlessly bothered, and
that the system is usually right on time to make room for more.
Note that setting the time limit to 0 days is not the same as disabling the
trash can. The items will not be purged until a recording starts. Setting a time
limit of 0 days allows you to delete files while recordings are in progress,
without interfering with the recording.

Thank you for your explenation. t would be a good idea to also put this story in the wiki so it can also be found if this topic is on page 123 of the forum list ;)

Another question? Is it also possible to hide the trash can using a setting (so you don't always see it in your movielist). If you want to restore a deleted item then you can unhide it for that reason.

I have set the trashcan in "Menu - Settings - System - Recording - Use trash can" to "no", since I don't want to use that feature. However, when I try to delete something from the recording list using the red button, I get the error message that no trashcan would exist. No matter if I answer "yes" or "no" here, a folder "trashcan" is being created.

I also noticed that before that trashcan folder had been created, the context menu when pressing "menu" on a recording did not show the entry "Delete". The only entry that is somehow related to delete stuff was "Delete rogue files", and I have no idea what that means. Now, after the trashcan folder has been created, the "menu" context menu seems to be complete.

What do I need to set in order to completely get rid of the trashcan feature and folder?

PS: I'm using the nightly build from yesterday on a VU+ Duo.

... "Delete rogue files"...

That's not something from "our" movielist.

I think you have the Suomipoeka plugin installed, which can replace the movie list. There's your problem.

I have a quick question.

I use Total Commander as an FTP client to access my HD51.

However, I have probably no access to the trash folder. Total Commander does not see it even though its setting indicates that system or hidden files should be shown.

You're logged in as root, so you have access to everything.

Either it isn't there (which is possible), you're looking in the wrong place (there is only one trash folder per device), or your FTP client is hiding it from you.

Hi,

if you want that Total Commander can see the directory (here i use .Trash instead .trashcan ) then you can create a symlink in console (with telnet) in my case and as example;

ln -s /media/hdd/movie/.Trash /media/hdd/movie/___Mist

works, after that i have the symlink ___Mist and i can look in it with Filezilla now.

Pike

In other words, the client doesn't show hidden files?

Note, you don't need the option "Show hidden/system files", that is for local files only. You need the "FTP show hidden files" option, after you have connected to the box.

Hi WanWizard,

You need the "FTP show hidden files" option, after you have connected to the box.

Filezilla have a option to display hidden files, but i don't know how it is with Total Commander.

EDIT !

Why use total commander, while you can use normal explorer? Explorer shows the hidden files!

Thanks. I must have looked at the wrong option then.

OK, Windows Explorer indeed shows .Trash folder.

nothing to install for Total Commander -> Net -> FTP Show Hidden Files

Now Total Commander shows them too.

Thanks.
