NTP in Enigma2

joseb's Photo joseb 16 Feb 2011

Hi,

I have an ET9000, but these questions are probably valid for all boxes:

- It looks like my ET9000 takes the system time from a satellite stream, is that right?
- If so, would it be feasible to use the box as an NTP server?
- Any pointers on how to get an NTP server running to be installed?
(I don't know anything, but I have installed and configured an NTP server
on my EEE PC)

Just a thought, interested in any pointers or ideas.

I would not want to use the satellite transponder time as NTP source. It's groslly inaccurate, for starters because the signal has to travel 60000km before it reaches your receiver.

Hi,

It is possible it's not very accurate, but the distance can't be a reason:
a common accurate time source is GPS satellites, which are not exactly
at roof height either. I might just try, and see what happens.

Thanks for the pointers.

The GPS receiver actually uses the time difference between the GPS satellites to determine your location...

But it's not the only reason - most providers provide crappy time sources, and the time code is often delayed by the output stages. And I'm sure you'll be able to find a time source that's more accurate than 0,5 seconds or so...

'most providers provide crappy time sources, and the time code is often delayed by the output stages.'

Ok, that makes more sense, I was already afraid of that.
And yes, there are better time sources readily available. Thanks again.
