I've flashed my VU+ Solo with OpenPLi-2.1-beta-vusolo-20120114_usb.zip but it does not recognize my original VU+ USB Wi-Fi Dongle. There is nothing that looks close to wireless in Setup|System|Network|Adapter settings or Setup|System|Network or Setup|System

I've plugged it into the front USB interface. Restared the box multiple times (Restart Enigma2, Restart, Unplugging the power, reset button on back of box). I've checked that WirelessLan is installed under Extension management|Network. I have even uninstalled it and reinstalled it to see it it makes any difference. It is not.

Hopefully someone can help or I'll be forced to try a different image

The VU+ Wifi dongle comes with a software for Linux in the form of a tar.gz but I have no idea how to install that using OpenPLi
(rtl8192CU_linux_v2.0.939.20100726.tar.gz)

the wifi dongle that came with my vu+ Ultimo is vendor: 0bda ("Realtek Semiconductor Corp."), product: 8178. That product is not part of the covered aliases should you check the list report in modinfo rtl8192cu. And injecting the alias/ID generates and OOps.

Workaround ....

echo "0bda 8178" -n > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/r8712u/new_id

Still no luck? I'm having a new go with Open Pli but still has this problem. I'm using the Realtek RTL8192CU Wireless LAN 802.11n USB 2.0 Network Adapter aka the official Vu+ wireless usb dongle

thx, you know most of the bb file should not be needed? (and the patch as well, so the recipe can work for all architectures)

I think something as simple as this should do the job

DESCRIPTION = "driver for Realtek USB wireless devices"
SECTION = "kernel/modules"
LICENSE = "GPLv2"

RCONFLICTS_${PN} = "kernel-module-rtl8192cu"
RREPLACES_${PN} = "kernel-module-rtl8192cu"

inherit module

SRC_URI = " \
    file://rtl8188C_8192C_8192D_usb_linux_v3.3.0_2971.20111128.tar.gz \
"

S = "${WORKDIR}/rtl8188C_8192C_8192D_usb_linux_v3.3.0_2971.20111128"

MACHINE_KERNEL_PR_append = ".0"

EXTRA_OEMAKE = "KSRC=${STAGING_KERNEL_DIR}"

do_install() {
    install -d ${D}/lib/modules/${KERNEL_VERSION}/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi/rtl8192cu
    install -m 0644 ${S}/8192cu.ko ${D}${base_libdir}/modules/${KERNEL_VERSION}/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi/rtl8192cu/rtl8192cu.ko
    install -d ${D}/etc/modutils
    echo rtl8192cu > ${D}/etc/modutils/rtl8192cu
}
