USB Boot Wiki

's foto hemispherical1 29 apr 2012

I added a wiki entry on how to boot the dm800 from a USB stick (no barry allen or plugins). I know it works with the 800, but if anyone feels like playing with other models to see if it also works with them (8000, 800se, 7020hd, 7025, etc...) it could be linked into their sections of the wiki besides the 800 section. I don't have access to any other models to test myself...

Thanks,

For mkfs.vfat, you need to build dosfstools recipe. It is available in our openembeedded, haven't checked if it compiles OK.

edit: it builds and runs fine in my et9x00.
So recipe dosfstools just needs to be added in daily build.

root@et9x00:~# mkfs.vfat
mkfs.vfat 3.0.11 (24 Dec 2010)
No device specified!
Usage: mkdosfs [-a][-A][-c][-C][-v][-I][-l bad-block-file][-b backup-boot-sector]
       [-m boot-msg-file][-n volume-name][-i volume-id]
       [-s sectors-per-cluster][-S logical-sector-size][-f number-of-FATs]
       [-h hidden-sectors][-F fat-size][-r root-dir-entries][-R reserved-sectors]
       /dev/name [blocks]

Well, that would make life simpler if it was included in the feeds. Thanks for pointing it out malakudi...

There's already an item on the wiki for the 7025 and a CF card (it's by far the best way to run it). Using USB on a 7025 will make it much slower, the 7025 does not have a USB2 interface. The CF card is on the fast IDE bus, and is usually as fast as the card can go.
