dish alignment on which channels?
#1

Does it makes sense to align the dish with a HD channel, an extra strong channel, or a week channel? I only can receive free to air channels.
How much SNR in dB is needed for error free reception?
For Astra 1 I have always used Das Erste, a German TV program, but I forgot about the reasoning behind.

I usually align the dish using a weak channel or transponder.
Here is an approximate list of how much signal you need to open a channel. This list shows the minimum amount needed.
DVB-S2 QPSK
1/4(FEC) -2.4 db(SNR)
1/3(FEC) -1.2 db(SNR)
2/5(FEC) 0 db(SNR)
1/2(FEC) 1 db(SNR)
3/5(FEC) 2.2 db(SNR)
2/3(FEC) 3.1 db(SNR)
3/4(FEC) 4 db(SNR)
4/5(FEC) 4.6 db(SNR)
5/6(FEC) 5.2 db(SNR)
8/9(FEC) 6.2 db(SNR)
9/10(FEC) 6.5 db(SNR)
DVB-S2 8PSK
3/5(FEC) 5.5 db(SNR)
2/3(FEC) 6.6 db(SNR)
3/4(FEC) 7.9 db(SNR)
5/6(FEC) 9.4 db(SNR)
8/9(FEC) 10.6 db(SNR)
9/10(FEC) 11 db(SNR)
DVB-S2 16APSK
2/3(FEC) 9 db(SNR)
3/4(FEC) 10.2 db(SNR)
4/5(FEC) 11 db(SNR)
5/6(FEC) 11.6 db(SNR)
8/9(FEC) 12.9 db(SNR)
9/10(FEC) 13.1 db(SNR)
DVB-S2 32APSK
3/4(FEC) 12.6 db(SNR)
4/5(FEC) 13.6 db(SNR)
