while http:// links work with the sources.xml
if you try to use https:// links they will not.
https: is more secure, surely they should work as well... ?

*** moved to the correct forum ***

People have such a fetish for HTTPS these days, probably fueled by the likes of Chrome. HTTPS doesn't do very much for security, it only encrypts the data in transit. It doesn't protect against tampering, it doesn't make sure you communicate with the correct party, it doesn't even prevent man-in-the-middle attacks (although doing that is not simple).

What exactly do you want to secure? What exactly is worth tampering with?

Chances are it doesn't work because the servers in question don't support https...

http:  or https:  Not much I can do about.  It is determined by the owners of the download sites how they allow people to link to their website - downloadsite.

Furthermore.  From experience I can tell you that https: creates more problems than it solves.  Ever questioned why suddenly some parts of a website does not work any-more.

That is more to do with lousy programming than with https. ;)

I for one find it stupid to waste CPU cycles on encrypting data that is public anyway, I don't see the point of downloading over https.

Well, https: is the reason I have to keep updating .NET and mono (on Linux) to keep up with all the new stuff introduced in https:

And find out that for some Windows versions, there is not an update anymore for .NET.  And then I am stuck.

And also the reason, you have to keep updating your browser.
