Zgemma Star 2S. I've tried the new 8.2 version and I have problems with digital audio. The higher frequencies seem to have been lifted slightly causing scratchiness to audio, particularly when someone uses the letter 'T', less so with the letter 'S'. I can't bear listening to it so I've gone back to 8.1. My audio runs HDMI to TV and optical from there to an external DAC and headphones. I get the same audio scratchiness with the headphones directly to the TV.

Let me know what more info you may need, and how I can help diagnose this.

Have you downmix enabled? If not the problem must be elsewhere.

Yet with 8.1 there is no problem. Even a vanilla installation of 8.2 is giving problems. The only thing I haven't tried yet is the analogue outputs on the Zgemma, looks like that is my next option.

Vanilla install of 8.2. These audio distortions are also on the analogue outputs of the box with 8.2, no issue with 8.1. Really surprised no-one else has heard this(?). HD or SD, several transponders tested.

I wouldn't have a clue what could cause it. The Zgemma Star has been EOL for ages, so no driver update.

 

Processing audio is done completely in hardware, unless you have some exotic media that is played through ffmpeg (exteplayer3 for example).

I think I'll stick with 8.1. I was too late to edit my last but I'm also getting this distortion when streaming to my laptop over OpenWebif which says to me it's an issue, probably just drivers as you mention @WanWizard as it's only with satellite channels , but EoL so won't be fixed (I'll get over it, nowt wrong with 8.1).

Drivers in 8.1 are the same as in 8.2, and streaming is a digital copy of very bit that is received, as-is, the box doesn't touch the bitstream.

Set "Setup mode" expert and check Audio/Video setup again.

8.2 add more new audio settings.

That's my bad, tested streaming with 8.2 D'oh!
Final tests. Second star 2s with 8.2 - distortion.
Star 2s in bedroom (8.2) set to use remote receiver as fallback receiver (8.1), and the same distortion.
As you say there is no driver difference then this has to be firmware.

Sussed it. In 8.2 the ability to disable '3D surround speaker position' has been removed. I noticed this was disabled on an 8.1 box and when I selected any of the 3 other settings (centre, wide, extra wide) I get this distortion. Turning it off gives a clean stereo output.
Why I can't turn it off in 8.2 I don't understand. Can I have that option back?
Anyone else getting this?

Looks like someone made a typo:

Can you check on your box if "/proc/stb/audio/3dsurround" exists, or if it should be "/proc/stb/audio/3d_surround"?

Either the first or the second is wrong:

the first  uses an underscore, the second doesn't.

Adding AVSwitch.py made no difference, though I did notice the existing file had the .pyo extension.

It worked! Restarting Enigma2 reloaded everything and surround is now disabled
