Hey all! Ok as the subject of this message says I'm having trouble with openvpn on openpli for edision mini. Originally i used this to get it working:

opkg update

opkg upgrade
opkg install openvpn
download expressvpn openvpn file
rename to client.conf
copy username and passowrd to login.txt file
add login.txt to client.conf

add to enigma /etc/openvpn
reboot

Well i recently due to a failure of some sort had to update my openpli but now i can't get openvpn to work. Can anyone help me out?

My chrystal ball is being serviced at the moment. Please provide the openvpn logs.

oops!!! I think i may have murdered my edision os mini!!! :) I shouldn't laugh but based on everything I've thrown at it lately it's not surprising it died a death. I'm just gonna download the current openpli and try flashing it again. I'll get back to you as soon as i have it up and running. Apologies WnaWizard!

Bare with me!!!

Quite an achievement, murdering a box... ;)

For next time, first port of call is /var/log/messages. Chances are there is a config error that prevents openvpn from starting, for example something that has been deprecated in a newer version.

Is openvpn running?

\etc\init.d\openvpn status

is a tap or tun interface created?

ifconfig

Anything in /var/log/messages?

If it isn't running, do you get an error message when you start it?

/etc/init.d/openvpn start

tun device is missing:

2024-12-18 18:54:02 ERROR: Cannot open TUN/TAP dev /dev/net/tun: No such file or directory (errno=2)

I assume you installed openvpn from the feed, and not from some external source? Because we've addressed this in our startup scripts?

Sorry WanWizard but you've lost me...i basically just ran opkg install openvpn. How do i go about installing from the feed? I never had this problem in the past. Please keep in mind I'm fairly new to this. Please advise me on what i need to do next?

If you installed it from the feed (like you say you did), the startup script should create the device.

You can try to do it manually:

modprobe tun

if it gives an error, try

opkg install kernel-module-tun

followed again by the modprobe command.

if that doesn't give you errors, continue with

ls -l /dev/net/tun

if you get back that this does not exist, execute

mknod /dev/net/tun c 10 200
chmod 600 /dev/net/tun

then restart the box, and use

ifconfig

to check if you now have a tun interface

You said it worked before, so the kernel of the box should support the tun kernel module.

the openvpn command gives me a LOT of info, the main one is

OpenVPN 2.6.2 mipsel-oe-linux-gnu [SSL (OpenSSL)] [LZO] [LZ4] [EPOLL] [MH/PKTINFO] [AEAD]

not really sure if that's relavent but i thought I'd throw it in.

root@osmini:~# chmod 600 /dev/net/tu

chmod: /dev/net/tu: No such file or directory

this error is clear the device is called tun and not tu, so use that instead;

root@osmini:~# chmod 600 /dev/net/tun

Pike

Huh?

How is it that "mknod" says it already exists, but "chmod" says it doesn't? Was there a reboot in between?

What does "lsmod" say, is "tun" in the list?
