Help the microsoft hardware graveyard to become les bigger.

And it is less worse for the enviroment this way.

I found this article on the internet from the Dell forum.

You can upgrade from 10 to 11 or do a clean install that way.

All software upgrade functions are working. Even new driver upgrades etc.

First make a backup of your data, etc.

I tested it and it works without restrictions.

I saved many laptops and desktops from 7 or years older from being unnecessary waisted.

The speed of your "new" win 11 machine is the same as you are used to from what it was from win 10.

Note:

Create a hybrid Windows 10/11 USB flash drive.
Use Windows 10 Media Creation Tool to create a Windows 10 64-bit USB.
Then download latest Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft support site and mount it (Open with File Explorer).
Navigate to folder sources and copy the file install.esd Open the same folder in the USB, delete the file install.esd from the folder and paste the one from the ISO. That's it.
Boot with this USB to install Windows 11 without compatibility check.

NB. It could be that you have to convert install.wim to install.esd.

I used a free conversion tool for that.

Simplified replacement update to the above instruction:

Make usb bootable startup drive with downloaded mediacreationtool from the Microsoft website.
Once you've downloaded the tool, follow the on-screen instructions to create your installation media.

This command will bypass the hardware checks, making the installation process much easier.

1. Open a CMD Prompt as an ADMINISTRATOR
2. CD (Change Directory) to the USB stick with Windows 11 on it
3. Enter "d:\sources\setupprep.exe /product server".

That's it.

This will install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware and will not install Windows Server but upgrade your computer to Windows 11.

@Jork Will this also work for upgrading Win8 to Win11? (or doesn't it make sense to try an update on such old hardware)

Installing Windows 11 on your current PC - You can also see if your current PC meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 11. PCs that are running Windows 8.1 are unlikely to meet these requirements, but if yours does, you can purchase and download a full version of Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro or buy from a retailer. If you do choose this path, note that you will need to reinstall your apps (in some cases a newer version may be required) and take steps to transition files, data, and settings since the installation will overwrite the contents of your existing storage drive. It may be easier for you to first upgrade to Windows 10 (see the next option) and then upgrade to Windows 11.

I deleted the Windows 10 partition recently, after I discovered that I could play my games in Linux using Lutris (which basically uses wine to run windows games).

I have tested it and it works.

No bootabe disk making and other cmd stuff required anymore.

You have the choice of keeping your old files and documents during setup.

The only thing left is make an additional setup.bat file with notepad or similar text editor.

Download the Windows 11 ISO.

It is just fine to download it directly on your Windows 10 desktop.
Extract the ISO file and choose Extract here or Extract to folder.

Inside the extracted folder, create a new text file and name it setup.bat.
Open the file and paste the following code:

setup /product server

Save the  setup.bat file in the same folder as Windows 11 unpacked and execute it.
Windows will begin installing without checking for TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot.

I just upgraded last week a view 8 year old laptops from Windows 10 to Windows 11 with the same method.

Before that no update was possible due to failing system specs.

The current preview version of Windows 11 24H2 still allows setup with the "Product Server" parameter, so an upgrade may still be possible.
