I can partly help you:
If you use the CrossEPG plugin instead of XML Importer, you can configure CrossEPG to download 'OpenTV' data for Astra 28.2 East. This gives quite an extensive EPG for UK channels.

Thx, will try that. Do you know, whether I need to uninstall/disable the epg-import plugin before, or are they good to get along?
@Milo
Would there be a step by step tutorial anywhere? I'm not that familiar w/ linux (and unfortunately on the VTI image at the moment).
Thx

Daily automatic import just didn't work.
I don't understand why when the next version of the plugin is available, the old version stops working?
You should take into account that not all rytec epg users use openpli image to have the plugin update with the image update.

The old version still works, the new one just works better. The old version does not have the multi-server loadbalancing yet.

Some suppliers' images come with the XML Importer and/or CrossEPG pre-installed and/or customised, whereas others like PLi do not.
If your image requires you to install either one yourself as an extension, I would recommend not having both installed at the same time. I don't have any evidence to suggest it, but they might conflict with each other regarding how they interface with Enigma2.
Anyway, any 'Rytec' sources in either plugin ultimately use the same Rytec data.
So too do most of the CrossEPG xepgdb 'krkadoni' sources. xepgdb is an alternative method for hosting and delivering EPG data, and it can give shorter download times.
Regarding the XML Importer's technique of offering multiple/backup urls:
I recently asked the CrossEPG author if his plugin could use the same technique. He replied later to say his latest version now includes that. However, I don't know if that is only for 'Rytec' sources. i.e. I don't know if any xepgdb krkadoni sources using Rytec data are still derived from only one source.
CrossEPG is a separate project to the XML Importer, and has a site at Google Code.
(just Google 'CrossEPG' and it's probably the first result)
The author doesn't constantly update his plugin, but is very helpful when he reads and deals with issues.

People such as Willy and Milo know more than me, but I would suggest:Do we need to uninstall prior versions or can these be installed regardless?
If your image has either the XML Importer or CrossEPG pre-installed, don't try to remove them or install new versions over them. It may screw up your image.
If in doubt, check with whoever compiles your image.

First that server started to comunicate again.
Next I've updated the plugin to doglovers posted version anyhow. No probs, still working.
Thanks.
Nebvertheless, leecovuk's coment regarding extensive content fur the uk channels is luring me.
Could I check out Crossepg with Rytech inactive only (i. e. no automatic or manual updates), or would I have to deinstall. Don't both just clear and refill or simly update the same data pool?

Crossepg can use in addition the epg provided by OpenTV sources on the sat. However the rytec source does have also epg for these.

Yes, the end result should be more or less comparable. So the epg content within the box basically should be the same, right?
Regarding having CrossEPG and the XML Importer installed at the same time :
I have no evidence to suggest that it's a bad idea. However my feeling is that it could be.
For manually installed plugins, it's quite easy to remove / install them if you're using the GUI, so I would suggest doing that and also restart Enigma2 after doing so.
Then set up your plugin and off you go.
Regarding CrossEPG, using OpenTV for Sky Uk and Sky Italy would give a result similar to using the Rytec or XEPGDB sources for those countries. i.e. you probably don't need to use more than one type of source.
Also with CrossEPG, bear in mind that many of its XEPGDB sources carry the same data as its Rytec sources, however the plugin doesn't use the same naming convention for both.
Generally speaking, using all its XEPGDB sources would equal all its Rytec sources.
However, you would probably need to ask the CrossEPG author for further clarification of this.
