Guys please help. I am using Firmware release 1.0.9, 27.06.2009 and VLC 1.1.11.
The web interface for VLC is working. I see all my movies but when I select one to play all that happens is that is plays remotely on the PC. The movieplayer attempts to fill it's buffer and fails after 5sec (default) and then issues another command to the VLC server on the PC whereupon the movie restarts on the PC. The example shown on the PLi website shows VLC Front End listed in the plugins but does not mention it in the text. I thought that movieplayer was supposed to replace the need for VLC Front End. Anyway I do not have VLC front end installed.

Yes I did. I believe that I have followed all the instructions on that link and I have edited the .hosts file and put in a range 192.168.2.0/32. The Dbox is on 192.168.2.24. I have no problem streaming the other way i.e. watch TV from the Dbox on my PC. I have tried running VLC by setting the web interface using the GUI or via the command line, neither work.

Tried last night's OpenPLi-beta-dm500-old-framebuffer-20111012-231. It doesn't work either. This time the screen goes blank. Pushing the yellow button brings up the buffering message. It finishes as before at 0%. I have increased the time out to its maximum 10sec.

once again try:

restart box

1)
"C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --extraintf=http
(atached picture)

2) in ...\Program Files\Videolan\VLC\http\.host enable ip of your dreambox
- if is not enabled well, movieplayer displaying files, but cannot playback

3) in webif in Stream set ip of pc

4) in VLC options: try disable "Restoring DVB" ( i think, for maxvar it was better), leave empty 0.86, try Non-standard file
