Yes I experienced this exact issue with mgcamd, apparently others have the issue as well and someone posted the solution on another forum.
In the mg_cfg config file change the value of "B"
from
B: { 00 }
to
B: { 06 }
Apparently the box type does not get detected properly with it set to auto (0) with the new kernel

reboot the box, or replace /tmp/ex with /tmp/something_that_does_not_exists in the commands... I don't know how you got to get a /tmp/ex file.
Another thing to try:
remove the external harddisk (assuming it's USB, you still haven't answered that question)
wait 10 seconds
type "dmesg -c" (ignore the output)
plug the disk back, wait half a minute, then type "dmesg". That's the output I'd like to see.

You forgot to plug the disk back I guess.... there should be SOME output, otherwise the hardware is broken (which you claim is not the case).
FIRST "dmesg -c"
THEN plug the external harddisk (DO NOT SHUTDOWN), the disk should make some startup noises.
WAIT 30 seconds
THEN run "dmesg" and you should get a dozen lines of output. If not, the disk is broken, or it isn't getting power or so.
