freshly downloaded and flashed image, got no hdd or usb stick. Initial update/download of menu works fine, but attempting to download plugins fail. when selecting the plugin it says "please wait, downloading xxx. Waiting..." and the progress bar never starts moving. after about two minutes it fails by timeout. the error message then is "Download failed. Please check available space and your communication settings."

telnet'ing to the box, i opened software.xml and copied the url for the same plugin, then wget <url> from the telnet promt, and it downloads no problem. the plugin can then be installed by putting it in /var/tmp and using with the manual option

Probably something simple, like download procedure trying to save the file to a non-writeable filesystem? Anyone got any idea?

On a second look, installation never failed when i tried to do a manual, so i thought it was OK until i went looking for the plugin, but coulnt find it. i then looked at the .tar.gz i got with wget, and it only contains " <script>history.go(-1);</script>"

..so i guess its not supposed to work? example url: http://downloads.pli...el_1.2.0.tar.gz

Welcome on this forum.
That URL doesn't work. You need to replace #RELEASE# by "openpli", but that automatically works on a Dreambox. Are you still having problems downloading plugins?
Many answers to your question can be found in our wiki: http://openpli.org/wiki
