Picons should be placed either in the /usr/share/enigma2/picon folder or (better to my opinion) in /media/usb/picon folder.
The second option needs you to have a usb stick of course but it is a better choise because your picon collection will always be available to any image that you flash without the need to install them again...

It's a good idea to use an usb stick to stock the icon, i think of i do that.

But... on the second thought... DM500HD does not have a usb port (if I remember well)...
So, /usr/share/enigma2/picon should be the only option. Be carefull with the flash memory. Too many picons should be a problem...
