I need help in installing harddisk into ET9000, I bought a new samsung spinpointHD154UI 1.5TB 5400 F2 harddisk and installed it internally with the metal part on upper side and black side facing down. Please let me know if it is correct way of installing.

Secondly I went into setup->system->Harddisk->Initialization then select the harddisk showing ATA(Samsung HD154UI)-Internal(1500.301 GB)

I get error after about a minute Initializing storage devide Error: Timeout elapsed, sorry.

Can someone please help. Thanks

Just to add I tried a USB disk and tried to initialize and got the same error, so it seems like either there is a bug or some settings issue, I have set the harddik idle time to no limit.

Apologies for being too stubborn, but I was wondering if I initialize the disk in windows in Ext3 format using partition magic and put it back into ET9000 will it work or I will still need to initialize it.

most likely the timeout does not occur during the initialization, but after that (waiting for the device to be mounted again)

reboot, check whether the device is mounted, and create the 'movie' map by hand.

Is it compatible?

Do not forget to put a fan in, 3,5 inch HD tend to create some heat.

I personal put in an 2.5 inch notebook drive, less noise and heat.

No need to format the drive, ET9000 is can do this if you initialize.

Thank you both, I tried rebooting and still I get the unformatted harddisk. Regarding fan I see there is already fan fitted in ET9000 below the harddisk cage.

I was wondering if below stated process will work.

How to initialize HDD manually

Well, You have HDD (Internal or External) and You want to use it for recording and timeshift, but somehow initialization trough menu is not working ? Here is solution :

1. Connect to ET9000 by telnet and type this command

umount /dev/sda1

2. Now we will format HDD in ext3 FS

mkfs.ext3 /dev/sda1

3. With this command we will mount HDD under /media/hdd

mount /dev/sda1 /media/hdd

4. To be able to record and use timeshift we need to create directory movie in /media/hdd

cd /media/hdd

mkdir movie

.

why do you want to format in ext3 format?
I'd use ext4.
And, it's better to debug/fix the normal initialization process.

try the following:

init 4
enigma2

then navitage to the hdd setup, and initialize the hdd.
Then you can see what the commands are, and if anything fails, what exactly causes it to fail.

Then you might repeat those commands from the commandline. Or show us what goes wrong, so we have a chance to fix things.

I tried all above process without any luck it doesn't recognise sda1 I see sda but afraid it is not internal disk and unmount or format will not destroy the box,

can someone please help me how to manually initialize the disk and change to ext4 format, also I am new to openpli I don't see filemode option in main menu to see recorded movies.

initialize is running at the end of your log:

[Mkfs] 265/11179
[Mkfs] 295/11179
[Mkfs] 328/11179
[Mkfs] 373/11179
405/11179
[Mkfs] 441/11179
[Mkfs] 471/11179
[Mkfs] 503/11179
[Mkfs] 536/11179
566/11179
[Mkfs] 602/11179
[Mkfs] 634/11179
664/11179
[Mkfs] 706/11179
[Mkfs] 737/11179
[Mkfs] 782/11179
811/11179

so you just have to let it run, till it completes.
