Very soon it may well become a "proper receiver"...

Btw, pheonix: have you had the privilege of seeing an HD channel on Alien2, perhaps? It's awesome and second to none!

HD picture clarity on STi chip receivers blows any broadcom based receiver away, including the BCM7356 receiver that i own

We're talking about digital images here, and digital processing end-to-end. Since a bit 1 at the beginning is the same bit 1 at the end, there can not be a difference in quality.
If there is, it's either perception, or you have used "picture enhancement" settings to alter the image quality, such as sharpness, scaler settings, etc. In which case it's your own actions altering the quality.

i fully understand that its digital, and either 'there or not', but, using nothing apart from the standard images, with no extra plugins installed or any settings changed, colours are definatley more vibrant on my 2 STi receivers than they are on my BCM ones (using the same samsung tv, cables, etc)

HD for sure! Depth of black and richness of colours, sharpness of image - I have BRDCM, STi and ARM next to one another on the same plasma telly, same connection, same settings and quite a difference!
SD - DMM are really good there...
But HD - no doubt!

Depth of black and richness of colours,
i know i posted on another forum a few years ago after first using an STi receiver, and commenting how even on my LCD tv 'how black the blacks were' compared to my original DMM800HD, but i cant for the life of me find the original post to copy exactly what i said.
I know that due to the way the digital signal is processed, theres 'only' 16.4 million (plus 5) different colours available to be processed, but, my analogue Mk1 human eyeball somehow definatley picks out a difference in the processed signal after its delivered to the TV screen.
No matter how its possible, or not possible, or what technology may or may not be used to explain these perceived differences, somehow, they exist

And that's (more or less) the definition of 'perception'.No matter how its possible, or not possible, or what technology may or may not be used to explain these perceived differences, somehow, they exist
yes, but when the only difference in the entire system is the receiver itself, then its not only the 'perception' thats in play. for example, when you go into a store to buy a new TV, and you see how good the picture is compared to your CRT telly in the house, you buy the set, take it home, plug it onto your sky box, and the pictures nothing as good as it was in the shop. Why? as the one in the shop has been calibrated for the background ambient light, its playing on loop from a 1080P bluray disc, and its not connected to a sky+ receiver via scart lead and RGB
but, when you have a setup where its using the same screen, cables, screen setup, and the only thing different is the receiver, using all of its default values, and theres a marked difference in the end result that you see, its not just the viewers perception of what he sees thats different, something is making that difference
I use BCM receivers as my main receivers in all rooms of my house now, but, i still tinker with my 2 STi receivers, and they DO have a better picture quality, perceived or actual somehow, its better (probably not the best thread to start a discussion like this though lol )

It would only possibily indicate the box's software default values are wrong in your specific case.
Which is quite possible, nobody said the defaults are the best settings possible, in all situations. Like the TV in the shop, you need to configure the box for your specific environment.

I'd like to add that there is not a "fully transparent" mode on any enigma receiver I know. You can try to adjust all pixel altering values to "neutral" but it doesn't guarantee no processing is performed whatsoever. For some settings it's not even clear what the "neutral" position is. Unfortunately that is not something an image builder can implement, you need driver support for that.
For one, I'd very much like to have such a complete "by-pass" mode (as found on some amplifiers, for audio).
This means some difference might be observable between the various hardware and drivers. But if you try to get processing to a minimum, the difference should be minimal as well.
