Allegedly, gonna be like DMM tried recently with E2 - and lost in the courts...

I hope not but some indications are that they will try...

I read that E2BMC will be closed source? :/

And PrismCube?

If I understand OpenSource correctly the statement 'PRISMCUBE is a media player based on XBMC which is free and open source' would mean that the whole image should be OpenSource.

See http://www.prismcube.com/

No, this is not so much about XBMC but about XBMC4STB which is Marusys project and I have trouble pinpointing how this will be handled in a proper OpenSource manner.

They have, however, already indicated their intention towards more of a DMM type of thinking, which, if true, would be abominable!

I hope they loose that battle just as DMM lost theirs with them!

Well, since it came out it wasn't just about drivers as proprietary, which is fine, I guess - but about 'copyrighting' XBMC4STB and I have seen the © sign next to it, immediately!

Now, to me, this is a sure sign of corporate interests trying to appropriate something that is Open Source, in the same vane DMM tried their hand with Enigma2.

Not a good thing in any possible way and one can see tensions rising between Marusys and XBMC community... For a good reason, it seems...

http://forum.xbmc.or....php?tid=138449

no they are not working with us, they're just using our code and any statement about being an "official member of xbmc" is false. and i'm not seeing any source link on their website or sponsor link on ours, so i might be sending them a nice email pretty soon smile.png

But it remains to be seen how exactly will this play out. Will boxes like GigaBlue be able to use the code and adapt it for their HW?

Given OpenGL for BRDCM being available now....

Hmmm, if that is true it has all the ingredients for a disaster........

I assume things will become clear when the box has hit the market and hence the images must be released.

Let's hope for the best then!

Besides, this will be a cheap, "entry level" XBMC box, for starters, as many have pointed out the many shortcomings already...

Mark II should be on the same level (HW-wise etc.) as Duo 2, perhaps...???

Personally I think the level of the Solo² would be enough, but neither Prismcube nor E2BMC are looking like they would meet the level of Solo². Only hope is that the current information about the hardware comes from some early prototypes and will change. Regarding Prismcube there were often comments, the specs on the website are outdated etc. And in case of E2BMC there are still a few months until october... I think both these boxes should meet the HW of the current top receivers at elast or maybe be even better, otherwise it might be problematical despite a new and interesting system (softwarewise).

In some ways Ruby is better than both Solo and Duo 2s but there are a number of points to be improved ASAP, to catch up with the present, never mind the future - and that is a real downer for this machine!

Here is what opdenkamp, XBMC PVR developer says to the news:

nice that it's there now smile.png shame I don't see a source link on their website, and there's a bunch of modifications I can see in their screenshots that are interesting. it will also be interesting to see how they manage the DVB and DVR setup from within XBMC, so I'll be sending them a nice email requesting the source code + modifications pretty soon. and ask them to do a DVB-C version ;-)

Then he could also send an email to the E2BMC folks, because there is also no source link.

Wasn't thinking about this part somehow, but that will be indeed important whether the software will be open source or closed source. We will see. None of the products is out yet. Prismcube will be in 10 days apparently.

If I understand it correctly the manufacturer 'only' has to build a DVB/PVR application, that runs on top of 'free' XMBC software (and maybe drivers).

Looking at the PrismCube site this is exactly where Marussys has problems with: only two concurrent recordings; compare that with the mature E2-functionality....... That is of course the most important part of the whole system, and if that would be closed source I can't see that growing into a mature system very soon (if ever).

I am no IT engineer but...

They must build a kernel from Linux Open Sources and in it they must integrate the drivers (either they or their partners, who build the motherboard/chipset, write those?) plus whatever else might be needed in there...???

On top of that comes the GUI (XBMC in this case, E2, Neutrino HD etc. in other cases), which makes it possible for us, the IT lay people :D to enjoy their telly...

I remember the story with OpenSat, who contracted Celrun to write the GUI/OS. They relied on Sigma to produce the drivers and with them the functionality they allegedly promised etc.

It didn't function! OpenSat soon became OpenShite, because of the broken promises and inability to deliver on their promises, Celrun became Snailrun, with those "speedy improvements to GUI" of theirs and Sigma became Shi(t)-gma, as they simply refused to do what they allegedly promised and so forth...

So, the complex procedure might take some time to come to fruition... DMM had a specially setup firm to deal with it (Enigma1/2 and whatever else was involved in it), apparently... The "overpricing" went partially to those guys...

Correct?

I think Enigma was partly based on existing software and maturing it was, apart from DM's in-house engineers, largely done by hobbyist-outsiders; which was only possible thanks to Enigma being open source.

Ermmm, not really, no...

On C-T/Xtrend support forum you can find a long thread on the subject, with me asking all those awkward questions, when DMM was suing Marusys/Vu+ etc. It's in German section.

There were a few quite well informed people there and we got a lot of info on the topic, from who started what, how much did they do, who else may have contributed, who sold their arse to DMM and then attacked the (frequently) innocent consumers, instead of manufacturers and distributors etc. etc.

Of course, you must discount the DMM trabants and apologists who are quite blatant in their vociferous and misguided attempts to "make it all right", whatever DMM did and who did not give a flying f... about "collateral damage" (that's you and me, btw...) etc. etc.

Now that DMM lost it would be interesting to hear from them in their unbelievable arrogance...

But DMM are warring with the community for some time. They think they are larger than life and should not care about those that make their riches... Ahem...

I really hope Marusys are listening and learning! But I have my doubts...

You cannot compare enigma1/2 story to a new project.

Enigma was born open source and grow with the work of community. Then they decided to slam the door and keep for them all the game.

Marusys invested more than two years in the develop of Prismcube and make full opensurce should mean a suicide in the market.

I think simply they cannot.

But i hope they will let open as more as possible because i agree that a close source "cannot growing into a mature system very soon (if ever)".

They will have to respect that little fact or there will be trouble for them. As if they haven't seen DMM's attitude, as if they haven't fought it themselves... Ridiculous to suggest otherwise!

All the parts related to Xbmc (and marusys addons) and linux OE will be open.

That's not the point. The closed code is at different system level.
