I will not argue again, but you can migrate with a dFlash backup/restore after the Imageupgrade in 10min to ubifs without flashing a fresh image.

 

Hundreds of Dreambox users have done it this way when OE 2.0 was shipping ubifs, so the approach is prooven and tested.

What are clear dflash instructions... To avoid reflash..?

I already posted that in JTR Thread. Simly do the upgrade for getting the latest kernels and drivers which support ubifs, then in dFlash change backup tool from mkfs.jffs2 to mkfs.ubifs and do a backup which you then flash - done.

 

Sometimes it is not that bad to look beyond one's own nose :-)

 

Especially in this case as the risk is 0, because if it would fail you still can Flash a fresh image.

Update:

 

The 7020hd and 8000 now have latest drivers and kernels and ubifs already in the current OE 3.0 build.

 

As the upgrade now works too instead of flashing a current image if you want to keep you existing image setup you can simply do an ubifs conversion after the upgrade with dFlash by changing backup tool from mkfs.jffs2 to mkfs.ubifs and flash the resulting backup.

 

As now also 800se and 500hd have at least latest drivers and kernel with ubifs support if you want to convert these images to ubifs (as they stay to be shipped with jffs2) dFlash will also do the job with backup/restore as explained above.

 

So there is no need for using JTR any more and we could close this thread to prevent further confusion.

only on the 800se and 500hd you should backup with zlib compression (which is the default in dFlash for the small boxes when using ubifs). Then you will have about 9MB Freespace and still superior performance.

the problem as I see it is that the skull currently doesn't tell you if it's safe to update or not. If you have flashed the new version then it should be possible to use the daily update - but what if it is also broken ? You can't set a second skull to warn not to update. so as long as the skull is there, there will be a risk with the daily update for those who have flashed the new version.

it would be better to have 2 symbols, viz "!" meaning that a new flash is required if you want to use the daily updates, and the skull if the daily update is broken.

the "!" symbol could be displayed for a month or so. Anyone who doesn't use the daily updates for a month probably won't use the daily updates later on. If he does then he's out of luck. And people who have flashed the new version can update daily as long as there is no skull displayed.

For UBIFS Migration without fresh Install you have to do the Softwareupdate FIRST to get the latest drivers and kernel which are able to run ubifs and THEN backup with mkfs.ubifs in dFlash settings and restore your own UBIFS backuped image.
