Thanks, so with -j the erase works without error. You now should try to flash ONLY the kernel with fgwrite -j -k .... and see if the box still boots.

Then we have fixed ther kernel flashing.

The Bus error on the flashing of the root can hve 2 reasons - wrong geometry passed or the runlevel is wrong and there is stil lO taking place.

I'm not sure if runlevel 2 or 1 is single user mode on your box. Dreambox works with 1 vu works also with 2 which is used by fgwrite. I could add a runlevel option so that you can try if it makes a difference.

But first I will change that -j switch is default on xp even if not passed like it is for duo2 and solo2

Not quite for me (I'm a novice)

I had to re-flash from a different backup usb stick as the box locked on the MK Digital XP1000 manufacturers boot logo-screen. No network started so couldn't get to it by telnet.

back to normal now, no bones broken. Just wont be using that -j switch again

cheers Colin

Once more, you should then try to flash ONLY the kernel (hence the -k option) once with -j and once without and tell which one gives error and which boots.

It is that simple, if you have the correct arguments for flashing a partition you are done and can move to the next partition until your box is fully flashable.

I can't offer any other approach for boxes I don't own - or you do it yourself and I spend my time on something else :-)

I've flashed my Dreamboxes X00 times and VERY often with DreamUP in serial mode to recover when I did wrong to get a fully operational nfiwrite brinary.

If you are not willing to do at least a 2 digit number of trials to find the proper parameters ... then we are an troubles and should stop the project or only support boxes were user(s) are willing to spend the time of testing and giving input to get this functionality for their boxes.

This is not a personal blame or that I'm upset, I just try to explain how this works.

Or get a genius from PLi team who creates such a tool for you ... working out of the box.

Hopefully I'm not confusing the issue.

But my Original usb is ext4 and the xp1000 needs fat32 to flash, with a folder at the root named xp1000 with the 4 files included. The "noforce" file can be changed to "force", so that you don't have to press the +button during boot to flash.

During my play today I couldn't get any combinations of *zip files folders to work from either the GUI or via putty, which is why I asked how the file should look, ie xp1000 folder zipped or files inside zipped separately or both.

fgwrite to a folder was super fast even over my LAN

thanks Colin

OK, I think it is time to be pragmatic.

I removed all the boxdetection and imagechecks from the Plugin, it will simply Flash whatever ZIP file you provide in whatever subdirectories the content of the zip was packed (upt to 2 subdirectory levels as vuplus uses).

I fixed the saving of the Path in the settings menu of the Plugin.

I added the possibility to specifiy runlevel for root flashing -f 1 will go to single user mode in runlevel 1, but be aware the network is gone meaning you will not get any output during root flashing in telnet. -f 2 is the default if nothing is pecified which keeps the network running.

xp will now not NOT use jffs2 flag anymore as default as solo2 and duo2 do.

Have fun testing

Hello,

first of all a perhaps stupid question:

Is "Flash-Gordon-PLugin" something as "Muti-/Meoboot" (for example at Blakhole-Images) or is it something different? If so, what exactly is the difference?

Sorry for this question, but my englich is`not very good and therefore I have not yet quite understand all details ..

Regards

As the name suggests it is a Plugin for Flashing and wir works without any USb sticks while the box is running by simply choosing the image.zip from the backup location on the harddisk or wherever you specify.

You can easily switch images im flash with it. but it is NOT any kind or Multibooting.

And it is NOT finished yet, as I don't own or want ot own any of the boxes it supports. So development and adding of boxes is dependant on the users testing and givng the needed inputs. At the moment the Vu boxes should work and we are collecting iput for et/ct boxes.

Currently it supports only ZIp files from the gui, but fgwrite the binary doing the acutal jobs accepts directly the unpacked directory with the imagefiles, so if all nboxes work we could support also such directories from the plugin directly too.

@ColinB - now that errors are gone, does the flashing of xp1000 work too ?

@Gutemine

Using the backup file for the XP1000 created by pedro_newbie Backupsuite, I zipped it up and  it installed fine with Flash Gordon (v.8).

It took 3mins 15seconds from network mount hdd.

Good to hear that it now works at least on 2 boxes.

Flashing from network mount is slowing down the process so it is not the perfect choice but as we are using runlevel 2 instead of 1 it should work.

But try it from a local Harddisk or an USB stick and you will see the difference :-)

But we still need lots of input from the other boxes and the users need to try out also if -j is needed or not on the et boxes.

Keep on testing ...

PS: Yes, FG uncompresses the imagename.ZIP to an imagename directory to flash from there. Therefore it would be no problem to support also plain imagedirectories too as he is using them internally anyway already.

I have now made also for the et boxes the -j flash as default, as it seems to work for the xp box, solo2 and duo2.

Please use therefore the attached latest kit for your tests on all boxes.

It is explained on the first page and multiply troughout the tread.

fgwrite director_with_image_files

Type fgwrite without argument for the other Options. Or use Flash Gordon Plugin and simply choose a ZIP at /hdd/backup for Flashing on your box.

Thanks for your feedback. Then probably the other et* boxes will also work after the recent changes.

And Flashing from Plgin then should be OK too.

So we should have now support for vu, et boxes and the xp.

Please continue testing and post your testresults on your various, because only if the flashing of all boxes works as it should I will be adding any further boxes as the list should now include all boxes PLi supports.

Because if testing is finished I'll do a 1.0 Release Version for both fgwrite binary and the Flash Gordon Plugin and further enhancements will be done only on request and in new 1.X Testversions.

Just a Warning - If you don't manage to do all these tests within the next days so that we can release FG you will be in troubles as soon as he testkits expire.

I'm only sorry that it took so long, if you would haven been more motivated and give the requested results faster it would haven been only a matter of hours and not days to get it work.
