It's like with PC's. You have identical copies (one-to-one copy of the entire design, in possibly a different casing), which are referred to as clone boxes. Quality is usually inferior, as they cut corners to lower the price and still have maximum profit. And you have new designs that are compatible on the software level (like they used to say a PC is IBM-compatible, so it could run DOS or Windows).
Enigma2 is quite popular and well known, and every manufacturer tries to steal a bit of the market. With the advantage that they don't have to invest is software, it's freely available. Enigma2 doesn't really have any hardware dependencies, it requires a DVBAPI (v5 I think at the moment) compliant box that can run OpenEmbedded, not much more. The main reason there is no Enigma image for a particular box is usually due to lack of support for either one.
Since supporting a hardware platform costs money and time (sometimes lots of it), we only support a limited number of them. But since we're open, we encourage others to create a "Based on OpenPLi" for other platforms.
In terms of hardware selection, you need to look at your requirements. How many tuners? Which type? Any mix of tuner types required?
