It SHOULD display workgroups and hosts (as subdirectories). If it doesn't, there's a problem with your network, or something else.

THAT is the problem. Your box somehow doesn't have the "fuse" module. This also means that you cannot mount NTFS or EXFAT devices, just to name a few things.

You can try doing what the script suggested to you, and run 'modprobe fuse' and then start it again.

Odd, because that is how it behaved on machines I've implemented it on in the past. Maybe this has changed because it's been a while since I've used it (switched to autofs in most cases).

Solo2, fresh flash, no restore, hardly any settings made.

Network is browsable; networkbrowser shows all (Windows & Linux) devices neatly. As other devices do the the Solo2.

Forgot to say: this is a must-have. Just browse and play/copy/move/whatever.

The box is now going to look like a Windows machine with Explorer

Pretty sure: as there are no mounts involved, you can browse to every (available) location.

 

Just compare it with Windows Explorer: every location that can be reached will show up. And if a location shows, the contents can be handled (i.e. 'played' most of the time for an STB).

 

However: I can't be sure if this would be safe to use as recording location. But MiLo will be able to tell us.

Folder media/samba is there but empty. Browsing to the folder shows none of the samba-shares in my network (networkbrowser shows all of them)...

I presume that this solution also means that Samba isn't required any more?

That would save quite some resources.

 

Just tried to access the box via Windows explorer while Samba was not installed on my boxes; goes fine!

I thought this was a fuse driver, so client side software, I can't imagine it contains an entire cifs server stack too?

I think it uses FUSEFS. Anyway: no need to have samba installed on any box.

As I said: I de-installed Samba from all my boxes and I still can browse all my network locations (both Windows and Linux). So indeed including the Ext4-HDD's & USB-sticks of other boxes.

 

Not having Samba installed can save quite a bit of flash, RAM & CPU.

So for me this looks like a winner!

The boxes have "sambaserver" installed, which takes care of the server part of CIFS. This is the biggest part of the software.

There's also a "client" part which is probably called "samba" or so. That should be rather small.

smbnetfs uses a samba library to do most of the work. It doesn't need the client part though.

In order to be able to browse the box, the (samba)server needs to be installed.

Currently the major space saver is the use of a very old version of samba (3.0) which is what smbnetfs complains about. The later versions are a lot bigger because they did weird things to the way the libraries and executables are being created.

Only time can tell. If you get write access to the shares, it should work just as well as any other network client. It will solve the problem of long timeouts when machines were shut down. Fuse is less efficient than a direct filesystem driver, so CPU usage while doing lots of recordings might be a concern.

I'd suggest play soem more with it. But it looks like an excellent replacement.

I have the smbnetfs installed on PLi on Solo2.

My other boxes are on ViX; in ViX samba client and samba server are not installed by default. Leaving them de-installed still shows both the flash & HDD on smbnetfs.

I found no way to open password-protected files. There's no option to provide username/password. Any protected location shows like being empty.
