320 GB Winchester after intitialization show only 304 GB

This HDD is almost 3 years, but working very well, maybe something sector problems?

No conversion factor... harddisk manufacturers count a megabyte as 1000 while all operating systems consider a megabyte as 1024.

The larger the disc the more the size on the label will differ from what you size as capacity in your os.

So, this disc is perfectly fine.

kilo = 103  but in binary is kilo 210

mega = 106 but binary  is mega 220

giga = 109 but binary is giga 230

 

manufacturers capacity/(1024*1024*1024) and you will get your size.

If you check the System/Harddisk/Initialization menu, you will see the size as used by the harddisk manufacturers (1GB = 1.000.000.000 bytes, so 320 GB). At other places you will see a lower size (1GB = 1.073.741.824 bytes).

 

Although they are both "GB", they are just different numbers. Very confusing indeed, but there's nothing wrong with you harddisk. Also, the initialization of your harddisk takes a bit of space, but not that much.
