You do not set a password for the network (unless it is wifi), you set a password in each of the boxes.

If the boxes are linux-based (ie. OpenPLi) you can usually connect to them using telnet.

Changing the password is then done with the terminal command passwd .

yes box has got a password

so when I telnet or ftp I need to put a password

however when I go to my computer, then go to network

I see lets say my vusolo2 I click on it then I see:

harddisk

root

when clicked on them both are totally accesable no password is being asked?

That is probably because you already accessed them and entered a username and password.

Yes the samba server is not protected by a password in openpli. You can set password protection for a samba server. You wel need to create a password database or link the base password database with that from linux. I do not know anymore how to do it. Google around samba server, it will be explained somewhere.

I personally always remove the start off samba from my boxes by just removing out off /etc/network/if-up.d/01samba-start  the stop is then not needed anymore ass well so also the 01samba-kill out off /etc/network/if-down.d

I do not need samba server in my network.

If You are behind a good router like You should it does not mather. Since the server will not be accesible from out off You're network.(wan) Off course if other persons can acces You're wireless network big change that they will be able to acces you're box that way . Then you're last protection is a very good password.

yes I need samba

and other people have access to my network

so I cannot disable samba, but really need a password for it

best would be to link the password to the password from the box

I been reading but cannot find out how to do this?

you need to install a full samba package (be aware it weights ~ 7MB)

then you can set the password for root with:

smbpasswd -a root
