If you are interested in watching a transcoding-stream on a computer in remote and if you don't mind having a PC running as a transcoding-server, you can try my old experimental proggy, WinDreamRemote, which I wrote ages ago

 

It actually works very well with a good quality even at lower bit-rates.

Personally, I do not have a transcoding-supporting box (ET9000) so I would gladly use your WinDreamRemote occasionally.

For all you boys and girls, due to very populair request (maybe demand is the better word), I have made a plugin, yeah! that lets you configure the default transcoding parameters (bitrate and size) for the streamproxy. It is in the feed now, but you have install it yourself from enigma.

I read the whole topic but it seems transcoding on mobile devices does not work with authentification still.

 

I am using Blackbox on iOS.

 

Port 8001 works fine with auth.

Port 8002 does not work with auth. As soon as I disable authentification, it works again so I assume there is still a problem with authentification and transcoding ?

Perform tests in this order (Do not continue with the next step before the previous one succeeds):

1. Test locally using a PC as client. If it works, there is nothing wrong in E2. If it doesn't, the problem might be either on client (PC) side or in E2.
2. Test remotely using a PC as client. If it fails, there is something wrong with your port forwarding and/or firewall rules.
3. Test with any client locally or remote. It has to work and if not it's a client issue.

 I just bought a VU+DUO2 . After installing the latest PLI dated 8-3-2014 i found that the Transcoding plugin is shown in the plugin list but  does not install correctly  

Can someone help me with this

And what does happen so you come to this conclusion?

The stb is auto restarting, I also have removed the trans coding plugin and anew downloaded plus trying to install , same effect report on screen informs installation error and  again auro restarts . So cannot get in the trans coding setting for streaming  to tablet

Sorry , but it is not so much the plugin installation . What i described before is happening when opening the plugin for trans coding settings

If the gui restarts, there will be crash log in /hdd or /tmp. Without that we can't possible know what's happening.

Thnks for your patience. As you might have guessed i am a kind of a novice in this field.

I have found the crash log file in /hdd, moved it to a folder in the flash memory where i am offered several options for further action . But i am at a loss about  how to get this file to you or the forum . Could you pls advice ??

Get it to your PC using ftp or something like that and then post it here. Another option is to show the last 20 lines using

tail -n 20 crashlog (or whatever the file is called)

and then copy&paste these lines.

I tested that and step 1 dose not work. I contacted the app's developer, here is his answer :

Does work for me with or without SSL on both port 8001 and 8002 with authentication enabled. Tested with latest VTi 7 image including all online software updates on a Vu+ Duo2.

There are also no reports from other users about such a problem. Maybe the installed image has a bug in the web interface?

OpenPLi is not really optimized for Vu+ devices. The are trying to be compatible with too much devices for my taste.

The story of broken transcoding continues....

 

 

STB: Vu+ Solo2

Network: LAN or WAN, same result

Player: Latest Vu+ Player app with internal player enabled on latest Android version

 

Problem description:

In the spring, as many of us know, the transcoding function became broken. At that time, I didn't investigate further, as I didn't need the transcoding function right then anyhow. Two weeks ago, I tested the transcoding again - and it was working! Great! Then I decided to upgrade the STB to the latest image...big mistake. Not only did it break transcoding, but it removed all my settings, some plugins, skins etc. (this could be the subject of a separate bug/problem report...never mind). Fortunately I had a full system backup from end of August, reflashed with that one, but alas, transcoding is still broken.

 

I've tried:

- Clean install of latest image

- removal and reinstall of streamproxy and vuplus-transcoding

- checked and tested other values in streamproxy.conf

- etc. etc. etc. but nothing helps.

 

This is what I can gather:

- netstat -a -p tcp -n gives me listening on 8002

- ps does not show the process streamproxy

- when choosing transcoding in Vu+ player app, the first time, it will just show a blank white screen. using netstat again, there will be a connection from the device on port 8002 with status time_wait

- exiting the stream in the player, but not the player itself, then trying to connect again, it gives a black screen with the bitrate and status flashing

- using netstat will now give a number of connections, which increases for every time the app flashes, on port 8002 with status time_wait

- finally, if trying to change the parameters in Vu+ player, one will get an error message saying that the transcoding API is not installed on the STB...

 

What to do?

 

PS. I am Senior system architect specialised in Microsoft technologies (ask me anything ) but so-so with Linux, although if given some hints, I can find my way around this OS as well. What I mean is: I do understand tech talk and terminology.

I may be a sad git, but perhaps not the only one, if I ask: Where are the git logs and how do I find them?

 

And, if I am allowed to make a general comment: the biggest problem with Linux-based software is that "one is supposed to know" apparently. And when a newbie or someone who is not extremely familiar, then more often that not, he/she is sneered at - a bit like now (I've read a lot of threads on this board and, sadly, this is often the case. If not always...). This was my first post and the reason I've been holding off posting is just that "Linux attitude". No wonder Linux will never make it on to main-stream, desktop, use...

 

Anyway. This is my very personal opinion, which I'm in all my right allowed to have. Let the flame-throwing begin!

Forgot: Does this mean I need to update the whole image, or can I selectively just opt for the bug-fixed components? 

 

This is because I'd rather keep my current base-OS image and just install the fixed/required components, since installing the whole latest build introduces a host of other problems, as I briefly touched upon in my initial post.

 

If so: what would be the commands, syntaxes, what-if-something-goes-wrong, pointers to documentation, support, help etc.? I hope these things are neither closely guarded secrets of Linux-boffin's, nor out of reach even for people like me.

I'd prefer something that works well and is designed well and for which you need to some work to get it going (because the developers are busy doing developing instead of writing manuals or oh horror, doing marketing stuff). So that why I prefer Linux over Windows (yes, I am a sysadmin by profession and maintain both).

So, the bottom line is, there is no first line helpdesk. There is a search function, there is Google (or substitute your favourite search engine) and there is the always helpful community which we are always thankful for.

Yes, it's overwhelming for the newbie, but I don't think it's our (developers, other members) task to lead every novice one by one by the hand, there is simply no time.

I always say, to assume some effort from others, it's best to show you have put in some "effort" yourself (using the search engine of the forum, the internet search engine, simply reading some posts to get a general idea, so questions don't have to be answered over and over). An yes, your question/issue had also already been answered so that's why I am bothered, that's all.

I finally solved it myself.

 

For the benefit of those having problems with the transcoding, here is what I did, step-by-step:

 

1. Logged on to the box with telnet

2. Ran the command "opkg update vuplus-transcoding"

3. Ran the command "opkg install vuplus-transcoding -force-reinstall" (would maybe have worked without -force-reinstall)

4. Ran the command "/etc/init.d/streamproxy.sh stop" - shell reported that no such process was running

5. Ran the command "/etc/init.d/streamproxy.sh start" - shell reported process started

5. Ran "netstat -p tcp -a -n" and noticed that the process inetd was listening on port 8002, not streamproxy

6. Edited /etc/enigma2/streamproxy.conf and changed the listening ports to 8004 and 8005

7. Ran the command "/etc/init.d/streamproxy.sh start" again

8. Ran "netstat -p tcp -a -n" and now the process streamproxy was listening on ports 8004 and 8005

9. Changed the configuration in Vu+ player on my phone and pad to use port 8004

10. Transcoding is working again.

11. Made a full system backup.

 

Summary of problem: for some reason there seems to be a conflict in the configuration where inetd listens on port 8002. Since this process starts before streamproxy, the latter process can not start since the port is already taken.

 

See? Was it so difficult to write instructions/solution for other people to use? I don't think so...
