How do you intent to view non-free channels? Do you have a smartcard? From which cable company? Is that card supported?

Currently in use: VU+ Duo 4K (2xFBC S2), VU+ Solo 4K (1xFBC S2), uClan Usytm 4K Ultimate (S2+T2), Octagon SF8008 (S2+T2), Zgemma H9.2H (S2+T2)

That depends on your provider. But either the channels are not encrypted and free to watch (and you should have an image when you select the channel), or the channels are encrypted, and you need a smartcard.

Note that afaik a DM500C can only do MPEG2, so none of the HD channels will work. And I'm not sure it can handle all current signal encoding methods, after all, it's a very old box.

other people seem to be using these boxes but as you say some images are very old and on this sight seems to be the latest.

It has nothing to do with the image, the chipset in the DM500 just isn't capable of displaying anything but MPEG2. All HD, and a lot of other channels too, are MPEG4 these days.
