Hi,

I would like to see DVB-T and DVB-T2 channels and I'm considering buying either:

  •  VU+ Solo2 with a the USB Tuner: PCTV nanoStick T2 290e
  •  VU+ Duo2 with the new, recently released, internal DVB-C/T/T2 Tuner (not to be confused with the internal DVB-T/C Tuner)

Which of the two alternatives above is most likely to work reliably with OpenPLi?

Thanks, Ulrik

Hi,

It is always better to choose for build-in tuner (or pluggable tuner) because the manufacturer of the STB is "obliged" to provide proper driver since it is its hardware.

USB tuner sometimes works very-well sometimes not, and support can change with kernel update, after some major update you will need to reinstall them, etc...  if you finally choose for an USB tuner choose a company that is able to provide proper support for STB...

Hi,

Actually you should go with the option which proves to be fail safe.

Buy the usb tuner which is supported by your box linux kernel or can get easily ported to that kernel.

To sustain this statement - think about your stb as a "black" box where you can do "so little" with existing support, and "so much" with opensource support.

Which one would you choose ?

Both vusolo2 and vuduo2 are "still" supporting vtuner operation.

P.S. Only expressing my choice based on current experience with stbs without intend to offend anyone.

I have purchased a Duo2 with internal DVB-C/T tuner (no T2) and additionally I have two Hauppauge Nova-TD dual dvb-t usb devices.  Therefore, I have 5 dvb-t tuners (and also a twin DVB-S2 card).  Thus I have a total of 7 tuners on my Duo2.  They work well together and I can record many programmes from different transponders simultaneously (the Duo2 and Solo2 are quite powerful).

I do not require dvb-t2, but realise that the support for usb dvb-t2 is still limited to only a few devices. Then these devices may or may not be supported by your kernel.  From my experience (even with my wider choice of dvb-t usb devices), I recommend you get the Duo2 with the internal tuner (T2 in your case) and also consider whether you want additional usb based tuners (so that you are less limited in simultaneous multi transponder recordings).

Sundtek also has usb-T2 tuners. My experience is, that it is more reliable than PCTV 290e. The model I have is MediaTV Digital Home III.

VU+ internal ssh108 tuner is best when looking at signal/ noise ratio and sensitivity. Compared to c/t hybrid with LG tunermodule (less than 80%) this c/t2 with Samsung tunermodule shows 99%.
