Should I also replace the replacement elco that I added late last year or should that still be ok?

I am also wondering if I should replace the voltage regulator??

What would be the obvious signs that is on its way out or does it just fail totally?

Grateful for all the help here! :)

The voltage regulator is a bit tricky to replace (and to get by). I'd replace the elco and add the ceramic C and you should be fine.

Yes, I know it would be tricky but not impossible.

So, is the general consensus that if I add and perhaps replace my fairly recent replaced elco my vuduo will be firing on all cylinders again?

Recently I have changed Elco C807 on both my duo's.

One because it made problems that could be caused by this Elco and the other just to prevent it happening on that machine.

Both duo's are over 2 years old.

The faulty one has still issues (when it starts a second recording it will stop and restart enigma, so I have at least two ts files). I had this problem sometimes before the change of the elco, now I have it almost allways. I am not sure it is because of the elco.

There is also a ceramic thingymagic added.

Two cents of my experience with elco c807.

So you still have a problem with both a new elco and ceramic cap added?

@dog-man: I assume you adressed me; on one I have less and similar problems. As I said I am not sure the remaining issues are elco c807 related. Most issues however (instability, restarts etc.) are history

I don't get restarts unless I manually do them.

I get stuck on starting or a garbled reading usb even though there is no usb.

I also get stuck on starting after a software update.

Many reboots will eventually cure it.

If the elco was too far gone, the voltage regulator has bought it too, and in that case replaceing only the C doesn't fix the problem.

This is often the case if you have ignored the "vague" issues, and waited until it didn't start at all anymore...

I think I will look at changing the voltage regulator, even if it is difficult.

I am not sure if this latest development is to do with my existing problem or has been caused by the software update I did this afternoon.........

I have noticed today that the red recording (REC) light comes on intermittently for various lengths of time!

Even when the vuduo is not being used and is in standby!

I have checked and at no time is any recording actually taking place.

Things just seem to be getting worse!

and your box is exposed to the internet, by any chance?

you're not recording, but maybe some gatecrasher is watching a tv from your receiver... :P

you mean not exposed to the world (at all)?

and not "not possible because I have some non standard ports open, and have ultra strong passwords, etc etc"? ;)

I have no ports open to the vuduo.
It is connected to the internet but I do not card share if that is what you are thinking of.

If it is connected to the internet, it is exposed and can be misused.

It is NOT safe to connect your STB to the internet (for the same reason you should not connect your PC directly to the internet).

When you see this, login to the box, and type

netstat -lnp

It will give you a list of everything that is connected to the box, and to which port. Maybe that can give some pointers...

My vuduo is connected to the Internet through a router with a firewall enabled.

I have opened no ports for the vuduo.

I will try the above if I see it happening again.

As long as that router doesn't do port-forwarding to your box, you are ok. If it's caused by a network connection, that command will show it.

I have done no port forwarding to my vuduo. I don't need to. I have no reason.

If it was somebody accessing my vuduo, then why would the record indicator come on?

No recordings are actually taking place when it happened.

My gut feeling is that either the vuduo is in it's death throws and is about to fail totally, or it's software is corrupt for whatever reason.

recording indicator also lights up when streaming
(and maybe it's someone in your local network?)

Which is what netstat will show you if you check it when the red light comes on.
