I have an xp1000 reciever, and an external HDD 500 GB with USB 3.0. The problem is when I record HD channels there are a lot of dropping frames. Has anybody else faced this problem?

XP1000 is single procesor box. May be, you making some next activited when is recording HD.

Btw, box has USB2.0 only => your HDD works as USB2.0, but it is not problem.

Perhaps that the formatting used on the external HDD is important. How is formatted your external HDD?

XP1000

HD channels: 1080i or 720p, FTA or encrypted? All your HD recordings or some piticular ones?

I make my (timed) recordings to NAS and time shifted to 64 GB USB stick (formated on the box)

When I have dropped frames, most of the times this would be due to the satellite signal having interference on transmission origine (bad weather, airplane, ...) or locally thunderstorm or bird sitting on lnb.

Check your reception whilst viewing  by pressing twice the OK on remote. Top right corner should show:

SNR: 90% (the higher the better)

AGC 0%     BER 0

Hmm, this is not correct is it? AGC: showing 0% on 3satHD 19.2°

I use HDD NTFS system file. I've realized that some HD channels with audiostream  no more than 192 kbps have no dropping frames although they have resolution 1080p . As for the transmission my signal or AGC is 99% and I test the HD channels that are free. For example Das Erste  Astra 19 is one of the channels that has most dropping frames when I record. And I leave the receiver alone while recording.

Ntfs is the problem. In combination with high bitrates it's too slow. Please use with a Linux filesystem like ext4. At best format disk on the box (all data will be deleted when you format disk!!)

Problem probably has to do with NTFS formatted HD. Do you have a 16 GB or higher USB stick or another usb Hard disc you can format on the box? 8 GB would do for test recording 1/2 hour. Most likely this will confirm if you have issues or not.

The German public broadcasters using high specs on their 720p with 3 audio tracks, one of them AC3 or sometimes even E-AC3. They don't pose any problem here with xp1000. Recording on daily basis from those channels. ;)

All is about bitrate on channel and speed of disk. On Das Erste has high bitrate, imho and NTFS is problem for it.

AGC is irelevant info on some boxes... missing support in driver.

The problem is not NTFS on it's own, NTFS is a fine filesystem, nothing wrong. The problem, imho, is that is implemented using fuse, a userspace layer in kernel, which makes it less efficient. So that's why I'd recommend using ext3 or ext4 as well.

I was pretty sure that the external HDD was formatted in NTFS that's why I ask the question.  :D

As stated by others here please use a linux native format: ext3 or ext4.

Let the box format the disk and it will have optimal settings for harddisk recording. You can let a PC do it, but it will not perform as well.

Thank you very much guys, it was it. I left the box to initialize an 8 gb USB Stick, and after that I recorded a channel that used to have more dropping frames, now it was perfect. So, this means that I have to use a linux operating system to transfer the data from USB or HDD, but thanks again for helping me to find a solution. :D

If you mean by that that you would like to read that stick with a Windows PC, there are solutions for that.

Currently in use: VU+ Duo 4K (2xFBC S2), VU+ Solo 4K (1xFBC S2), uClan Usytm 4K Ultimate (S2+T2), Octagon SF8008 (S2+T2), Zgemma H9.2H (S2+T2)
