Hello,

 

I would like to install ntop on openpli 4.0 / DM800se.  I can see the package available in the source repository http://sourceforge.n...e/recipes/ntop/ but it is not available from the package repository (opkg list)

 

Should I install a cross compiler toolchain and compile it myself ?  Or compile it on the DB itself ?

 

Some context : I notice I have several Gb of network traffic by day.  and I wonder how much of this is caused by networking with my dreambox's peers. ntop is a tool that will help me to better understand network usage of tools like oscam

If you want to analyze network traffic, just put a PC between the box and your network (PC with two network cards in "bridge" mode, Windows or Linux will both let you do that) and use Wireshark or a similar program to see and analyze what's happening. Any PC will do, and you'll only need an extra network card (usually you can find these for free or buy a new one for about $7). A wifi connection may also qualify as second network adapter, just connect the box to the PC's wired connector in that case.

 

The alternative is indeed that you will have to compile it for yourself on a Linux PC and install it on the box. Nice way to do it if your goal is to learn more about this stuff.

Thank you - I knew about Wireshark and how to analyse traffic with a middle PC, but I specifically wanted to avoid that setup :-)  I have switches at home, not hubs, which make this setup more complex.

 

I think I will install a cross compiler and compile ntop myself then :-)
