Hi, 

Find this post really interesting,

I have a tons of content, movies, tv shows audio on my nas drive and I really want to use my enigma 2 box to show all the content, which it does, they all play flawlessly but without metadata information on the movies etc,  is there a way for me to create metadata for my content and do I need to convert all my content to .TS format for this to work?

Convert them to matroska using mkvmerge. Matroska has the index internal.

That's right, but Enigma doesn't show that info (in the normal movieplayer) the last time I tried. I needed to convert movies to .ts and added the title in the .meta file.

thanks for your replies, MKMERGE converts the file to mkv not .ts do I need to choose a different converter or will mkv work within the enigma 2 environment for metadata?

No, mkvmerge does not understand enigma2 metadata, but it will allow you to store/play a program without all of the metadata files (.sc, .ap, .cuts, .eit, .meta).

Interesting, I didn't know there was metadata with avi files.

What I did:

Use ffmpeg. It's a command line tool in Linux. Maybe it's also available for Windows or others. I used h264 as video codec. The output container is .ts

 

I typed something like this, but I'm not sure:

 

ffmeg -i <original-file> -vcodec h264 -acodec mp3 new-file.ts (I'm not sure I used mp3 for the audio codec)

I added the meta information in the .meta file. Just store a .ts file in the movie directory on your box and Enigma will make an initial .meta file which you can edit (it's just a text file). You can specify there the title name (instead of the file name), the creation time (I think it's the number of seconds since 1970 so not that easy) and the description. You just need to play a bit with that file; it was never meant to edit it by hand.

You can use http://www.onlinecon...m/unix_time.htm to create a Unix timestamp from a human readable date.

What I did:

Use ffmpeg. It's a command line tool in Linux. Maybe it's also available for Windows or others. I used h264 as video codec. The output container is .ts

 

I typed something like this, but I'm not sure:

 

ffmpeg -i <original-file> -vcodec h264 -acodec mp3 new-file.ts (I'm not sure I used mp3 for the audio codec)

Mostly you don't need to transcode, if the codec is already avc or mpeg2, no transcoding is necessary, just repack them (with ffmpeg or tsmuxer, which has a slightly better TS muxer).

 

If you're going to transcode, don't use the above command line, it's way too simple for a proper avc transcoding. Unfortunately one needs to specify lots of parameters for a compliant stream. In that regard is libx265 better, it only needs profile and level and you're good to go. Also don't use mp3, use aac.

My purpose was to transcode old mpeg2 recordings to h264 to save disk space and still have the meta data Enigma could read. As I wrote, I don't know what I did about the audio codec; it was just an example. I may even left it unchanged to mp2.

 

Anyway, the command line does work fine for my receiver. FFmpeg automatically selects a profile and level (depending on the input file) and sets all those parameters. It's almost impossible to specify those parameters yourself unless you have a Master in video transcoding ;)

ok so when i use location button on my enigma 2 box the metadata file has been created, now I tried entering some characters into the file and then cameout of the directory and back in and nothing.

 

This is what it looked like:

0:0:0:0:0:0:Westworld.ts147585162433182568011120148481880 westword is a crazy film this is a test of metadata for enigma 2.
 
any ideas why nothing showed up on my enigma 2

This is an example of my .meta file (named Airplane.ts.meta)

It shows the title "Airplane!" instead of Airplane.ts (the filename). And it shows that the original channel was "Veronica JETIX". The "1268849318" is the timestamp 17 March 2010.

The short description is between "Airplane!" and "1268849318" in my example (here it is an empty line). There's also a long description but that one is stored in an .eit file which is not text-based.

I am not exactly sure what data you want but i use tmdb info with my movies to add movie information.
