Hi Gentle Beings,

 

just unwrapped and installed my new VU+Duo2 (openPli 4.0 from yesterday, Nov. 19th)

 

The only Problem detected so far is:

When activating WLAN everything works according to plan EXCEPT if I hide my SSID on the router.

Of course "hidden SSID" is checked and all necessary credentials are supplied.

 

As Long as the SSID is made "visible" on the router, everythig works as designed :-)

As soon as I Change to "hide SSID" on the router (all other Parameters unchanged) --> no Connection.

 

Any Ideas ??

You are aware that hiding your SSID doesn't give any extra security?

this was a quite silly comment .....

 

However - my SSIDs (2,4 GHz as well as 5,0) are hidden.

although it gives no security it prevents occasional stalkers to even try.

And this is kind of security - isn't it ???

 

However:

I just tried with VTI 7.01 Image and it works as designed !

 

You may want to amend.......

Occasional stalkers don't have a password or certificate, so will be stopped dead in their tracks.

Serious hackers can't be stopped for a single second, they don't even look at what is broadcasted and what is hidden.

 

So a real case of "security by obscurity" with doesn't add anything. Except aggravation for yourself, as you have discovered.

well, we can discuss the usability of hidden SSIDs for ends....

 

Fact is, OpnPLi does not handle it properly whereas VTi does .

 

any comments on THIS ?

Yes, apparently we don't care as it doesn't add something useful. Believe two people with a professional background in enterprise level networking or don't, that's up to you.

different wpa_supplicant version maybe? As far as I know enigma2 does not handle anything about the SSID, it just saves it in /etc/network/interfaces. wpa_supplicant establishes the security. Does it work with hidden SSID but without security (no WEP, no WPA/WPA2) ?

It could also be issue with the driver of the USB Wifi. I think OpenPLI uses different drivers from VTI, since it is on older kernel. BTW, is there any plan adding the newer drivers for Duo2, Solo2?

Probably the wpa_supplicant config is set up to scan for ssids and pick a matching config. Try manually changing the config to change that behaviour and report back your findings.

"works properly" is a personal perception.

 

On one side of the table there is you wanting something to work different from how it works now. And on the other side of the table is a developer who works on this in his spare time, and most therefore be motivated to see your point of view otherwise no time will be spend on it.

 

You've already seen there isn't a lot of motivation, and by replying in this manner, you really don't make us more motivated...

"works properly" means that even the oldest Windows XP from the very beginning of WLANs could handle this issue.

and the necessary parameter always used to be: "connect even if the network does not broadcast it's SSID" (and it still is there in Win 7)

 

And I wonder why a modern system in 2014 can not.

 

This is a basic feature and - sorry - it does NOT work properly in PLi 4.

For what reason did you then implement the possible selection of "hidden SSID" in the configuration ?????

If only we would get paid for this like Bill Gates or even just a "normal" Microsoft developer, I guess it would have been working right away! Instead we need to have daytime jobs for a living and all work we do on OpenPLi is for free. See the subtile difference?

Well, that could be arranged. If someone is willing to pay me my hourly fee to get this implemented, there's always room to talk.

Well, if it's not working well, it's a bug.

If it's not implemented, it's not.

 

I never uses the WLAN-client of my Duo2, but there is a "hiding network" option.

So if razorback is right and it's not working, it's a bug.

No reason to stone him to death.

Noone is "stoning" razorback. Actually we gave him two possible explanations for the problem. It could be the wpa_supplicant or the driver of the usb wifi-stick.

Sure it is a bug if it doesn't work, a bug that is not critical and a bug in a feature that the core developers don't use. You can't demand for a fix if the developer does not use/care about this option - especially if it is not something critical.

Indeed, enigma cannot know if the device driver implements certain features, like hidden ssid.

there is no "WLAN-usb-stick" on the Duo2 - at least not externally visible, it's just the box.

or maybe there is something like this internally connected to a USB-connector ......

 

I don't know and I don't want to know so I don't care.

It's there and it works properly with VTi (and like you, I don't have all the time in the world just to check out with all the other available images for the Duo2)

 

If you don't want to support this mentioned function, don't offer it in the config.

It is USB Wifi, if I remember well it is with Realtek chipset.

Yep indeed, there is nothing "internal" about it, you just buy a STB with a WLAN USB adapter packed and connected from the inside.
