Rytex XMLTV has only 1 (important) shortcoming !

It does not clean the previous EPG before to save the new EPG.

The result of this is sometimes/all-the-time in double/triple/more start/end times for the same events.

I solve this by clearing the EPG every day via the system-tools which means that my daily programmed download of the Rytec-EPG doesn't make much sense.

This is a severe shortcoming guys, I really wish you could do something about it :)

The reason behind this is simple: you can not partially wipe the EPG data, it's all or nothing.

Say you use Rytec for SKY UK, but EIT for CDS and German TV.  Then you would want to erase the SKY entries, but not the others. This is with the current EPGcache design not possible.

It's one of the many reasons the entire EPG system needs to be rewritten...

OK understood.

Is this re-writing going to happen in the (near) future ?

The reason for this question is:

When I do a clear of the EPG via the system-tools, I discovered that not only Enigma is automatically restarted but also the Rytec EPG is downloaded automatically right afterwards.

That solves the problem, but it means that I have to do it manually every day.

This might come in very handy because I only use Rytec EPG:

Can I eventually replace my Automated daily "Rytec download" by a daily automated "Clear of the EPG" at say 08:30 ?

- This would clear the EPG

- Enigma would restart (see above)

- Rytec would be reloaded with the latest event times (see above).

Do you see what I mean ?

It's being discussed, but nothing is planned. It won't be easy, the core code of Enigma is spaghetti that would make an Italian "mama" proud...

It looks like those system tools simply kill Enigma. That would cause termination without saving the EPG cache. And if you have configured the XMLTV plugin to import on startup, it would start the import after Enigma starts again.

I understand what you mean, but I don't have a solution for you.

It now works nicely in DreamOS OE2.2 to selectively load EPG and keep the EPG for other channels intact

Sorry for being a nuisance @gutemine :

What is DreamOS OE2.2 (I have an ET8000).

If I can use DreamOS OE2.2, than how can I get it ?

So you suggest that we all buy a dm820 or dm7080 to enjoy that functionality?
Sounds like dreaming. Or a nightmare?

Are the sales really that bad, you need to spam/advertise about your little last creation in favor for a free box on another board where support is almost zero for this unpopulair brand for you to push some sales.?

Let me fiction answer this for you: YES

Deny that  ;)

Owh noes mistake you are answering a users question

Strange that you spend a lot of time supporting clones of this 'unpopular brand'

I'm not advertising anything - the user was told that it is not possible - which is simply wrong.

Right is that PLi and all your great vendors have all the needed sources since years and are even aware that this problem is more then overdue to be solved - BUT none of these are willing or capable of doing it . so much for the advantage ...

Mhh GM last post removed what a pity  ^_^  not :)

A small miracle PLI Moderation does allow your DreamOS spamming overhere, on your homey board its even forbidden to speak about PLI before they go apeshit and have sleepless nights, nevertheless the word/combination PLI is censored..

Anyway to get ontopic each user has a own way of importing EPG with Rytec's importer.

I dont update EPG on a daily base, only every 5 days or when i notice the UK Sky's are getting empty.

Before im gonna import fresh EPG, i always reboot ONLY E2 with the init way to make it clean and then start the importing procces.

This 'method' im using for over 3/4 years without never ever having the 'result of this is sometimes/all-the-time in double/triple/more start/end times for the same events'.

Mhw EIT is enabled also..

@gutemine.

In the spirit of corroboration, can you publish your method of installing XMLTV import on a OE2.2 machine.

I get questions about this on a regular basis.  And I cannot answer it.  (I do not own a OE2.2 machine)

Or send me a link where I can refer to, so at least I can help those people.

I am compiling the EPG for the linux community (and I understand also the Windows Mediacenter community is using this XMLTV data).  The linux community also includes the DreamOS.

Rytex XMLTV has only 1 (important) shortcoming !
It does not clean the previous EPG before to save the new EPG.

This is not related to XMLTV.
XMLTV is just one of the possible sources of EPG-data, and they all use the same in E2 embedded mechanism to add their data to the existing data.

To all

I understood that the problem is not related to Rytec XMLTV.

The problem should be solved elsewhere - where can I post this problem please ?

As said before, we are aware of the problem. It's on the long list of EPG issues.

What we don't have at the moment is someone with enough spare time and energy to rewrite the EPGcache system.

@doglover - there is a long Development and Discussion Thread on this in the DMM Board, which inlcudes all the necessary informations from the DMM devs and also at the end the code of the 2.1 version of the XMLTV Importer Mod I created for OE2.2.

For people too lazy to search there, I also created a Thread in OoZooN's board, where you might find also an EPGdbBackup Plugin.

My Mod is fully downward compatible with the current EPG Importer code as in case of DreamOS it uses an epgdb.py and for the old enigma2 it stays with epgdat.py

epgdb.py is just 2 pages of code, so it is NOTHING to be scared of, as using a database makes the whole live much easier and flexible then the 10 year old epg.dat which is fully of bugs and patches needed to keep it running.

I did also some minor enhancements to the existing code like kicking out the idiotic way to check if a channel is available by duoing a dummy recording and I added also the possibility to extract EPG Language form the xmls , as this is also a new feature that epg Database supports.

All this was done without doing harm to the existing code - it still runs for example in an OpenATV Image on my dm7080 and dm820. But this would need some testing to be confirmed.

I took the original plugin ipk from the rytec webpage as basis for my mod and as it is GPLv2 all my changes and enhancements are compliant to this and could be used by others too or even checked in into the git.

Ciao

gutemine
