I have two ET10000 boxes in different locations. Both are connected to the network using the Gigabit Ethernet VLAN port (eth1).

On both boxes the interface is continuously flapping. It happens about every 10 minutes. Within one day the dmesg log is full with those messages:

root@et10000:~# dmesg
bcmgenet bcmgenet.1 eth1: link up, 1000 Mbps, full duplex
bcmgenet bcmgenet.1 eth1: link down
bcmgenet bcmgenet.1 eth1: link up, 1000 Mbps, full duplex
bcmgenet bcmgenet.1 eth1: link down
bcmgenet bcmgenet.1 eth1: link up, 1000 Mbps, full duplex
bcmgenet bcmgenet.1 eth1: link down
bcmgenet bcmgenet.1 eth1: link up, 1000 Mbps, full duplex
bcmgenet bcmgenet.1 eth1: link down
bcmgenet bcmgenet.1 eth1: link up, 1000 Mbps, full duplex
bcmgenet bcmgenet.1 eth1: link down
bcmgenet bcmgenet.1 eth1: link up, 1000 Mbps, full duplex
bcmgenet bcmgenet.1 eth1: link down

When playing content from the network I have hickups and interruptions whenever the interface is flapping.

I already discovered the problem when I bought my first ET10000 in June 2014.

Now that I have a second one I'm pretty sure it's not related to the cabling or the switch I'm using.

I have tried switches from Cisco, D-Link and a Linksys router. Even when connecting directly to a port on my Cisco router the interface is still flapping.

It even doesn't matter when is set speed and duplex manually to 1000/full. I also tried different straight and crossover cables.

When using the Fast Ethernet port (eth0) everything is ok.

Anyone else experiencing this problem?

No.

Maybe the chassis element is damaged. I had something similar with a PC recently, if I manually pushed the UTP connector down, it stopped flapping.

Turned out someone had forcefully removed a cable, bending one of the contacts in the chassis element.

Currently in use: VU+ Duo 4K (2xFBC S2), VU+ Solo 4K (1xFBC S2), uClan Usytm 4K Ultimate (S2+T2), Octagon SF8008 (S2+T2), Zgemma H9.2H (S2+T2)

Due to my bad health, I will not be very active at times and may be slow to respond. I will not read the forum or PM on a regular basis.

There was a bootloader upgrade to fix a problem with the ethernet that looked a lot like what you report here.

I have flashed this bootloader on both boxes:

I'm  not 100% sure if flash was successful.

Is there a way to determine which booloader I'm currently on?

Is that bootloader in the Openpli flash?

Because after flashing 16-1 image ,they appear again in dmesg.

It seems the et10k bootloader needs to be flashed separatly. Use the "down" button instead of the "up" button, btw.

Uhm, when I have to reflash my et10k I have to confirm this reflash by pressing <OK>, not the (channel) <UP> button on the box.

Nice to know: Regular PLi flash - Press <OK>, Bootloader flash - Press <UP>. Correct?

Hello,

I would like to relive this topic, on my ET8000 i am continously fighting with LAN connects and disconnects, on heavy NAS recording and playing - there are frequent timeouts (from 10-30 sec)

cat /var/log/messages

Sep 28 10:22:25 et8000 user.info kernel: bcmgenet bcmgenet.0 eth0: link up, 1000 Mbps, full duplex
Sep 28 10:26:53 et8000 user.info kernel: bcmgenet bcmgenet.0 eth0: link down
Sep 28 10:26:54 et8000 user.info kernel: bcmgenet bcmgenet.0 eth0: link up, 1000 Mbps, full duplex
Sep 28 10:27:53 et8000 user.info kernel: bcmgenet bcmgenet.0 eth0: link down
Sep 28 10:27:54 et8000 user.info kernel: bcmgenet bcmgenet.0 eth0: link up, 1000 Mbps, full duplex
Sep 28 10:54:32 et8000 user.info kernel: bcmgenet bcmgenet.0 eth0: link down
Sep 28 10:54:33 et8000 user.info kernel: bcmgenet bcmgenet.0 eth0: link up, 1000 Mbps, full duplex
Sep 28 10:55:25 et8000 user.info kernel: bcmgenet bcmgenet.0 eth0: link down
Sep 28 10:55:26 et8000 user.info kernel: bcmgenet bcmgenet.0 eth0: link up, 1000 Mbps, full duplex

last bootloader flashed ET8000 Bootloader 2014-08-21 http://www.et-view.n...bs/bsub3_1/6934, with flashing completed

changed cabling 2 times, different switches (1GB - manageable - 100fullduplex did not help,100MB) different patch cables

showing statistics for eth0 - there are some strange errrors

root@et8000:~# ethtool -S eth0
...
mdf_err_cnt: 376089

carrier changes are growing

cat sys/bus/platform/devices/bcmgenet.0/net/eth0
carrier_changes 1338

can anybody help with this behaviour ..?

thanks

I have also this problem with LAN and VLAN.
Did bootloader flash solve the problem?

I have it on the et8500 (a bit less though). So it's a problem not unique to et10000 or et8000. Drivers, interface, phy? Who knows...

thanks for feedback,

I have couple of ideas in my mind...

I think - if the "problem" appear also on ET8500 is not good information, personally i checked ET7500, ET7000 - it is clear (/var/log/messages)

I am a strong fan of ET's and now I have a fear to buy next Xtrend's until this issue will be solved (optimistic version) I am in hope that manufacturer will take care in short time..

I played littlle bit with setup and it looks for me, that there are some configuration setups when this error does not occur, for example, yesterday - I plugged out usb key from connector under LAN one, did deep stand by and wake up, and from then there are no disconnect messages in /var/log/messages. So may be there are some sharing of resources between USB and LAN PCB circuits ..? I am in feeling that this is only temporary state..

next option - workaround - is there any success story (100 % working) implementation of additional USB to LAN adapter, for example like "GigaBlue Gigabit LAN adapter", I tried to find any USBNET usb-->lan adapter drivers in Openpli repo's but without success ...

thanks for helping ...

I have both boxes (et8000 and et10000) and had never this problem. But I also heard from some guys that they have this problem. I and some other testers couldn't reproduce it.
Maybe it is really related to usb usage. I don't use usb interface very much and if I use it I often use the front usb.

My guess would be the PHY, that's the part responsible for maintaining the link. Problems in the emac usually show way different symptoms.

Might be a bad setting, a bug in the chip (e.g. the micrel 9031 had a bug that it advertised a capability that it didn't really have), or something completely unrelated like a leaky capacitor.

Yeah, causing the modulation to jitter, I can image that would cause a link down at some point.
