PLi's enigma using 2 users xml: one is common for ALL skins and it is skin_user.xml. Second is specific skin_user_nameofskin.xml.
skin_user_nameofskin.xml has priority and when is presented feg. for PLi-FullHD skin, then skin_user.xml is not used for this skin, but is used for all others skins.
Yes and that is a problem if you have things in your own skin_user.xml, e.g. for the layout of the LCD display.

Why ? Recreate skin_user_nameofskin.xml and then your own things put into skin_user_nameofskin.xml in some editor. That's all...
Plugin need create structures for font, windowstyle and colors and then changes only parameters in lines. Of course, when user use Recreate, then create new file, but still is there .bak
I think, is nonsence create for it new .xml with top priority on start, which will be used for colors/fonts/windowsstyle only

If I use skin_user_nameofskin.xml, it will get overwritten when I run the plugin, not?

It is overwriten only, if you use blue button - "Recreate".
When you will use Green - is only changed items used by plugin and next item in skin_user_nameofskin.xml are untouched.

I'd like an option to have it changed in skin_user.xml because the layout of the display needs to be the same whatever skin I use.
Even better, enigma should simply read both skin_user_nameofskin.xml and skin_user.xml, problem solved 
The plugin can then simply overwrite skin_user_nameofskin.xml without side-effects.

enigma is made, that last parsed skin.xml has priority... and it is ok. skin_user_skinname.xml solving different user's setting for different skins.
Would not be better create some as user_skin_display.xml imho? It is display_skin_id=1
Ant is it so big problem copy your own setting from skin_user.xml to skin_user_skinname.xml ? May by, add to plugin options - "accept" skin_user.xml => put skin_user.xml into skin_user_skinname.xml ?

That's true. I supposed display usage of xml file, that's independent from the (screen) skin. But maybe there are other things in it.

From v. 1.15 is not used any skin file => you can remove yours /etc/enigma2/skin_user_PLiFullHD.xml or /etc/enigma2/skin_user_PLiHD1.xml or clear it.
Into v.1.16 was added options for display selector's vertical lines.
Under yellow (Font) is added run for online changes - works for all, except for ChannelSelection - for it works after restart gui.
But font change for ChannelSelection works without restart gui too - due it is name of button "Font" :-). Not bug, enigma's feature.

Note about using - you can see all setting immediately after Yellow => plugin is closed. Then you can see it in all screens ( except ChannelSelection screen - there after reboot only )

I am just trying to understand it all
- user starts plugin, sets preferences
- plugin writes preferences as xml to custom xml file in /etc/enigma2
How do the preferences in the custom file get into the skin, if it's not skin_user.xml and also not skin_user-SKINNAME.xml? Is there code in the skin itself to read the settings, did I miss a patch to enigma that also reads this xml file?

if you made own template, then:
a) replace original with your...
b ) or, if you want use some own template, place it into /etc/enigma2/skin_user_PLiFullHD.xml or /etc/enigma2/skin_user_PLiHD1.xml
