Do you have the name of the github repository?

Currently in use: VU+ Duo 4K (2xFBC S2), VU+ Solo 4K (1xFBC S2), uClan Usytm 4K Ultimate (S2+T2), Octagon SF8008 (S2+T2), Zgemma H9.2H (S2+T2)

Due to my bad health, I will not be very active at times and may be slow to respond. I will not read the forum or PM on a regular basis.

Many answers to your question can be found in our new and improved wiki.

Further info from the author:

The problem exists, but not in the addon. Users can disable cache, users can configure a small update interval, your servers can not send Last-Modified header. You can select any issue.

It is your right block or not.

BR,
Anton.

So it is the users, and we ourselves which cause the problem.

He is not going to do anything.

you should tell this "author" that his addon should not allow the users to switch off the cache or to specify a small time interval - by allowing this his addon breaks the conditions for using the XMLTV files on your servers, and as such access from his addon to these files will be refused.

if he doesn't respond to that, then he's dead meat as far as I'm concerned

one question though : can you tell from a XLMTV download request from which addon the request is coming ?

Hi,

As I have read the main problem was the traffic that users make to get epg's files.

For this reason I want to express my will to vulnettary host the epg's packages on my servers.

I owe some dedicated servers in Europe with 1Gbit upload and unlimited traffic ofcourse.

So my question is: with who I have to talk in order to make it real?

Thank you in advance,

Regards.

doglover can help you on that.

Be warned though, I have servers like that as well, but they still went down under the request load (it's not the volume, it's the number of concurrent requests).

You can mitigate some of the issues with some smart rewrite rules, and I use fail2ban as well to block serious offenders on IP. Note that it requires quite a bit of memory.

@WanWizard

Hi and thanks for the reply,

I know that it will be problem with the concurent requests but I think there are some possible solutions.

One of them is the smart rewrite as you have mentioned above.

I can implement a mechanism to give access to the epg files only once a day / IP.

Ofcourse there are other possible ways to do the same thing but I will not walk through in this moment.

I will try to contact doglover as you suggested me and I hope I will be able to help solve this problem.

thank you again,

regards.

At Kodi they are now also convinced there is a problem.

Yes, PVR Manager tries to update EPG for channels with no epg data every 5 mins. I cannot control this into addon. But there is a possibility to control this via advancedsettings.xml like in this example:

Code:
<advancedsettings>
  <epg>
    <updateemptytagsinterval>10800</updateemptytagsinterval>
    <updatecheckinterval>10800</updatecheckinterval>
    <activetagcheckinterval>10800</activetagcheckinterval>
  </epg>
</advancedsettings>

Problem here is the default settings are checks every 5 minutes, and it is up to the users to set the above values themselves.

Extra problem is that the setting file where this is to be set, does not exist by default.  The user has to create it.

The advancedsettings.xml file, which does not exist by default, can be created by a user in their userdata folder.

Very nice is it not.

Sorry, but I lost track of the current status.

From a user prospective:

Is it worth trying to make it work again at the moment (p.e. updating sources...) or not?

Before finding this thread I followed others (earlier), tried updated sources.xml but none worked.

BTW: I'm on VTI. Their feed offers rather an old version for (re-)install. Where would I find the topical plugin? Rytech.be lists 2012 versions. Would that be the most recent files?

Looking for UK epg beyond now/next mainly (Germany).

Are there any working alternatives/workarounds known?

Thanks for your excellent work. Served me very well for the last years.

Felix

The plug-in version of 2012 on VTI should still work.  Nothing wrong with the plug-in (XMLTV).

It is only the sources which should be updated.

VTI should have it in there feed.

I love the plugin, and have been using it for a long time... It works fine on my Vu+Duo, and I cannot thank you guys enough for that...  ;)

I *do* have an issue with the plugin on another box which is (currently) running PBnigma (It never gets the up-to-date sources, apparently, since all requests fail, and I am stuck with 0 events on every download attempt), but I am considering either switching to OpenPLi on that too, or possibly investigate the option to copy the VU+Duo epg.dat to that box automatically each night...

Unfortunately there aren't easy fixes for issues like these! API keys, user accounts, etc. are very cumbersome to administer over a distributed environment like the one being used. I sincerely hope you guys can fix it!

If it works on your VU+Duo.  You have the latest sources.

Look in /etc/epgimport/ and copy the file to your other machine.

pls. do not share the file!!

Well, no downloads anymore because of the measures we have taken:

but, looking at the error codes (for april, on one server)

404 Document Not Found (hits on favicon excluded)      10,267,414

403 Forbidden                                                                  4,992,400

There are still many, many request from which are not fulfilled.

Which was to be expected.

In order to stop these, Kodi users have to modify there configuration.  Most of tehem do not even know how.  And the Kodi programmers not really willing the change anything on their system.

See here:  http://forum.kodi.tv...d=223594&page=2

To indicate that it is a real problem: The last contribution in this thread is from a member of the Kodi team, and I want to copy it here:

I agree with you on this. Kodi should either try far less often or stop trying after a certain number of failures.

Trying to access the EPG every 5 minutes is likely an issue even for local networks. I just checked my own NAS tonight and found out that this 5 minute check (due to one channel never having EPG data) prevents one of my hard drives from ever sleeping. Apparently it has been doing this for at least a month.

Willy,

I am Kodi programmer in Israel. I have also problem with EPG XML and M3U channel list i provide. I change 4 servers until i could give ppl good service but it was only for 3 months and then change again.

In my case i did some trick to block Kodi brutal  behavior, but there is no magic. And i am only in Israel.

I had:

1. 4TB Traffic per day

2. 400M/b bandwidth 100% all time.

3. 50M Req by day

Server was choke every 2 day.
