Understood.

So on these occasions when the changes are so large that the online update is unable to bring a users image to the state of the latest daily released beta, why not place a warning telling users that for this update using the online update will not work and a reflash is required.

A user can then decide if he indeed wishes to reflash,or just continue using his existing image, knowing full well that its slowly becoming outdated and obsolete.

In others words, the user can reflash at his leisure,as he wont be left with a broken image and be forced to do it immediately, which is what occurs now when the online update fails in its task.

Ian.

You simply cannot fight human nature.

If an update is available nearly all users will wish to apply it,even though we all know that having the latest is not always the same as having the best and many updates have to be reverted.

So because of this a simple warning that if you update online you may be left with a broken image is all thats required as this particular update requires a reflash. This warning would only have had to be placed 4 times in the last 4 months, but doing this would have prevented many broken users images.

The alternative of course is to always ensure that the online update brings a users image up to date without it breaking. If this is not possible (as i suspect) then surely this simply warning when major updates are applied is a good idea ?

if you have a good working box, and update 1 or 2 times a year, then you have the same situation as a few years back, at that time there where only 1 or 2 times a year a new image release.

And i am afraid if enough people cant handle daily (beta) builds we are going back to that situation, and i dont like that.

There where warnings before the update, people dont read it or dont care about it, only complaining, they can write about it so, i suppose they can read to

Its not the daily beta builds that are the problem !

They are a great idea and for the most part work very well indeed.

The problem is the inability of the online update to bring a users image to the state of the next daily beta build.

If its not possible for the online update to do this on a particular occasion (not very often i must add) then simply place a warning stating this.

enigma before xx xx xx requires a reflash to install this update, enigma after xx xx xx its fine to proceed.

Job done.

you need only a volunteer to test them all every night directly after the builds?

No I wouldnt think so.

For the most part everything works well and the online update is added without issue.

Its just on the odd occasion when the update is massive "bringing Pli into the 21st century" was quoted earlier in the thread, that this warning would need adding to the online update server.

The Pli team know when these updates are this large and this important and at these times the a fore mentioned warning would simply be prudent.

Its rare, but recently, its been needed more than average.

The warning was there, and has been online for a week.

Since that mechanism doesn't allow messages to be tailored for specific boxes and/or versions, it's an all-or-nothing system. If we leave it on to long, people that have already flashed the box will still see the message, and start complaining. Either way, we lose.

The only thing we can do is bump the OpenPLi version, so you are forced to flash. Which we didn't want to do, since it was not a major OpenPLi update, it was an update of a few specific boxes...

Currently in use: VU+ Duo 4K (2xFBC S2), VU+ Solo 4K (1xFBC S2), uClan Usytm 4K Ultimate (S2+T2), Octagon SF8008 (S2+T2), Zgemma H9.2H (S2+T2)

Due to my bad health, I will not be very active at times and may be slow to respond. I will not read the forum or PM on a regular basis.

Many answers to your question can be found in our new and improved wiki.

Ive checked few other alternative images and it seems that only OpenPLi and OpenBlackHole have the "spinner" issue while playing/pausing the movie

BH and VTI can play/pause/forward the very sam movie without any issues

this is the only annoying thing about PLi that hasn't been sorted since the kernel/drivers upgrade - any progress about this guys?

Which version works for you is something only you can determine. I don't have problems with the latest drivers and gstreamer.

OK back to the topic,

I had some problems with my HTPC so I'm using my vu solo as a media player, I only use Open Pli, I find other images unusable, I tried BH but I think there was this exact problem, so I found somewhere a open pli 3.0 back up image,

and flashed it, immediately media player works as smooth as ever,

installing all the plugins manually is a pain in the a.., but anyway,

I often use webradiofs, so I have to install that, but for that to work I have to install python-sqlite3.. and for that in Open Pli 3.0  I had to install some other files (libc6, libpython), so after all this I managed to get it working in OP3.0,

but then I tried Media Player bump still the problems, :(

now I don't use Linux and I spend 3 days of flashing and telneting stange commands, but from my understanding Media Player just break after  a opkg update or upgrade in Open pli 3.0 (I changed url cause there are no feeds for OP3),

now, I have 2 options,  OP3.0 with Media Player but no webradiofs, or OP4.0 with webradio but useless MP,

I think many useful plugins depend on the software being up to date, so thank you anyway for your work..
