Mediaboxen grote plaag filmindustrie:

Great plague in film industry: Mediaboxes

- The Boxes have names like "Filmspeler, Teevee.io, Ditistv en Allefilmskijken" with the promise "consumers can watch absolutely everything for free".

- "Those films and series should be paid This is a form of downloading from illegal sources and that is not allowed in the Netherlands.."

- The BREIN foundation has launched a lawsuit against one provider. That case is now before the European Court. If the court prohibits this mediabox, BREIN will prosecute other providers/vendors.

The BREIN foundation is the joint anti-piracy program of authors, artists, publishers, producers and distributors of music, film, games, interactive software and books; A unique bundling of forces of the entire entertainment industry in the fight against Intellectual Property theft.

I guess those boxes have never been as much in demand as they will be starting today.

Journalist just don't know when to shut up in the interest of the common good :)

No but if you use Facebook, these 'sponsored' advertisements pop up every time! Even responded to them (DitIsTV and TeeVee.io) thet their services are uillegal. Those boxes are nothing more then Raspberry Pi 2 with a little box around it.. Linking to a streaming server.. Never got any response back..

Their business plan is probably to just sell boxes until they sold their whole stock. Then abandon them, so they stop working in a while because the web servers that support them go offline. Customers can't complain because they were illegal to begin with.

@MiLo

My sentiments exactly! Seems a bit like a 'business plan' by students in the Netherlands. When I fill in their 'Order' the billing accounts are the same! (Off course I do not actually want to buy one). But just out of curiousity.. Funny thing is that the remarks and questions are always answered by 'Yes'. But when I submit a message that their devices are illegal it it removed in minutes (and off course no reply)

I always wonder why one would need a "special" piece of hardware to play/view the media. The only reason is the hiding of the secret urls. And indeed, when enough receivers are sold, they pull the plug (or are "helped" a bit by the department of justice).

One should know, and this principle is layed down in the law, that if something sounds to be good to be true, it probably is (illegal).

You'd say there would be a huge market for non free cloud services (e-mail, calendar, notes, drive, etc, etc) where you'd pay in money not with "yourself". But in practice, it appears we are never that true to our principles when it actually comes down to paying real money.

That's one of the things that irritates me most about the whole "privacy" discussion.

Strange thing is, webhosting is dirt cheap, a domain plus private mailserver and some hosting cost only a few dollars per month. You'd think it to be a small price to pay for a bit of privacy.

As for cloud services, I much rather keep my digital stuff in my house where it would at least require physical access to my machine, instead of somewhere out on the internet where some hackers or criminals could get to it without anyone noticing.

I wonder where are all the "reasonably cheap but not free" e-mail providers? Human psychology I guess. It's easier to complain then to act or to pay.

A long time ago I didn't saw the need for privacy. If everybody could be traced, crimes (should) could be easily solved and it might even prevent them from happening. Yet, then someone (black hat) said to me, he (to my suprise) wholeheartly agreed.... on 1 condition....I had to arrange that there would be a rock solid democracy for a zillion years....alas I could not ;(

Good and Bad are IMHO sometimes very difficult concepts, because one mans terrorist, is another mans freedom fighter.

My point is that people are hypocrite. It's all of highest importance that nobody, especially secret services (nobody talks about hackers...), know anything about you, but as soon it's going to cost money, it's silent. That annoys me. It would be a relief if e.g. the c't magazine could go start write about interesting, technical topics again.
