I'm trying to track the cause of a couple of problems that I am having with my DM8000 from since a couple of month ago. I keep updating the box every week but the problems haven't gone away:

Problems:

 - box crash when recording. The box will crash when recording, but not always. sometimes it can be almost a week before it crashes. It records a couple of programs every day. When it crashes I see the recording message on the OLED and touching the front button will make the box automatically reboot.

 - enigma2 crash when fast forwarding on cutlist editor. This happens I think when there was some think of problem with the recording ( like bad weather that causes skipped frames or something ). The rotating icon will go on and on and the box is unresponsive. I can ssh into it and restart enigma2 and everything will work again but enigma will crash again on the exact same place.

 -  on cutlist editor when fast forwarding on some recordings the preview windows will display one frame and then a couple of seconds another and this repeats itself, while about 20% of the preview window will display the fast forward movie at the correct speed.

So, How can I track this, specially the first two? I can't find any crashlog on my box. there's nothing on /home/root or /var/log or /hdd/.

Cheers!

Recording with internal haddisk drive or nas? With nas it could be you ram memory is fragmented too much...

Hi Littlesat,

I'm recording to an internal HDD. I have tested the hdd for bad sectors with hddregenerator. Smart health is also ok. The disk is not the source of the problem.

The you should have crashlogs on the root of the hdd... Post the latest 2 or 3 once here... So we know more what's going on....

If there is no green screen you won't get crashlog. When the box freeze (endless spinner or complete freeze and you cannot login) then you won't get crashlog.

nothing on tmp.

When the box crashes the output on the tv is black and it doesn't respond to pings. When enigma2 hangs because of the cutlist editor I get no green screen, only the circle icon moving on the top left corner of the screen. When this hapens I can ssh to the box and restart enigma and everything will be good until I use cutlist editor and at that point it will again hang ( enigma ) at the same spot in the movie..

Then it has crashed. Driver/kernel issues. I got fed up with them on the dm8000 at some time and ditched it. The problem is, after years of waiting, DMM finally came with drivers for a more current kernel (required for OpenPLi 4), but they never got it quite right. The drivers never got as stable as for the old kernels.

A swap device may help, it will make the periods between crashes longer, but it will also slow down the operation.

I don't think it is a memory problem. When I ssh to the box it has free ram.

is there anything I can do to try to troubleshoot theses problems ? any way of enabling a log?

The amount of "free ram" you refer to has nothing to do with the availability of large contiguous blocks of physical ram.

Hi Erik,

Many thanks for helping me out. Thanks to you I understood that the only way would be to look elsewere, and that's what I did.

I am now using an image based on openpli by MastaG that solves all my problems exept the crash on FF on discovery channel recordings. No more crashes when recording, no more FF image problems when doing FF on some recordings.

thanks again.
