I know the status for the solo4k at least, not sure about the hd51 at the moment. For hevc playback using gstreamer on the solo4k, you'll need OpenPLi 5 (which is not yet released).

e.g. the Solo 4k has (of course) h264 codec in hardware, otherwise it would not be able to play HD-TV. But: there is no support for h264 encoded file (so other files then TS), so no playback of them.

That box has also no support for VP9, so many streams will not be decoded.

ATM i have xTrend ET4000 with h264 support (obviously) and i can play all h264 encoded files either by me (handbrake) or by others. I wrote to the manufacturer (http://mutant-digital.net) but i don't expect an answer soon.

Especially since Mutant doesn't manufacture Xtrends... ;)

Due to my bad health, I will not be very active at times and may be slow to respond. I will not read the forum or PM on a regular basis.

As is the case with most (all?) HD boxes.

But when a new codec comes out, there are always issues like that. The first UHD TV's didn't even have any h265 codec on board....

I guess you mean h265.

The in OpenPli 4 used Gstreamer 0.10 doesn't support h265 playback. And gstreamer is used for playback of media files like mkv, avi, .... Playback of h265 satellite transmission works as gstreamer is not used for this.

Nope: I mean h264.

Strange as it may sound: the Solo 4k simply has no support for h264 coded files. That's the price you pay for being a (dearly paying) trendsetting customer.....

But you mean UHD h264 encoded files. Normal 1920x1080 h264 mkv work. Or am I wrong?

Playing back MKV with h264 encoded 1080i meterial (transcoded from a digital camera) works okay on the 4k. I guess that Rob means that you cannot playback 2160p/i material from files.

Just tested again, MKV plays fine. Also tried an old experimental DVD rip, also plays.

This 4k runs an as of yet unreleased OpenPLi version ("master-next-milo") so that might make a difference.

Hmmm, I don't have a 4k myself, but I got this info from 'usually very reliable sources'.

But checking that info again I see that I've quoted it wrong. The message should be: "no playback of 4K-files with h264 encoding".

Hi Rob,

4K h264 does not work on Solo 4K.

Aaaaah, thats why  Ok. So the Gstreamer used by OpenPLi would just have to use a plugin for that. Wouldn't it be easy just to install the libde265 plugin from strukturag? If this cannot be done in the image - for whatever reason - this could be done manually by either selecting the plugin via GUI or via ipkg, right?

Yes that is true and it has been known for some time, it's no big news. There are no issues with h264 on the solo4k whatsoever, both DVB and media.

For someone who mentioned this a few posts ago, yes, so this is also no news.

Nope, it's not news, but there are issues. There are quite a number of 4k streams encoded with h264, and the 4k doesn't play them. Same story for VP9.

Afaik is there no h265 plugin for gstreamer 0.10 available. The mentioned plugin is for Gstreamer 1.x.
You'll have to wait until OpenPli 5 is released or have to switch to other image.
