Hi All

I have a ET10K unit running the latest VIX image but I've been looking at other images and came across your site.

Which is better for my box (loaded question I know :)  VIX or OpenPLi?

How do I flash the image, is the same as VIX? Stick it on a USB stick? Your link to instructions speaks of pressing down button and powering on (think that's for other Xtrend models)

Thanks

Paul

Stupid question ... if you are not happy then try all the images available, don,t ask "emotive" questions .... Only you can say which image is best for you.,

Hi,

OpenPLi is a very functional image with the minimum needed to watch TV  but all the extra plugins are available from there feed so quite easy to install if really needed.

Other images builders take the decision to pre-install many plugins (that you probably don't need) and for some images you cannot remove the useless plugins.

Other differences are the skins either you like X-Mas tree skins with many color or you prefer a more sober one, like the default OpenPLi one.  By the way, OpenPLi is one of the skin that provides the more useful informations.

So newbies will enjoy plugin rich images because they will find many features and start playing with them, once you will be a more experienced user of "Enigma 2" based images you will probably come back to OpenPLi and install just the plugin that you really need from the feed.

And finally since OpenPLi is not overloaded with many pre-install plugins,  it is a light, fast and stable image.

Flashing is receiver specific, not image specific. So , whichever image you choose, you flash the same way.

Try them and decide which you like most.

Thanks to Pr2 and Abu for the replies. Its the main family box which also does streaming for the rest of the house.  I'm looking for a rock solid image  and the recent VIX updates seems to be getting flaky with my box, might just need factory reset but I'm thinking killing two birds with one stone.

Even with OpenPLi when you perform an online update you can get problem afterwards (there is  a disclaimer that warm you of this risk) mostly when drivers/kernel are updated, so it is sometimes needed to perform a full flash from USB.  So when your box starts to have troubles, first thing to do is to try a brand new flash.

With OpenViX I would never do a software update, as the couch flashing of a new image is so easy providing you backup your settings, and you then have a clean image each time. .. and as mentioned there have been Xtrend driver changes recently.
I have never used the software update process since the couch flash was introduced and have never lost my system.

Thanks for the updates. So OK, are you saying every time there is an update I should update via USB / new flash with restore of settings?

@TWOL Can you please expand on couch flash?

Sorry, I shouldn,t use "buzz" words.

In OpenViX if you press blue button, choose ViX  and go to the ViX utilities (Backup Manager (actually Settings backup/restore), Image Manager (Image backup/restore)

Then choose Backup Manager and backup settings

Then Image Manager, yellow button download Image from ViX feeds. Then choose the Image you have just downloaded to the receiver and hit Blue button (Restore Image)

The receiver will then be clean flashed (using Betacentauri's flash tool) and will reboot. (Couch flash!)

On reboot go through usual wizard and restore the settings backup.

Sounds long winded, but is very fast, no need for a usb, and you always have a clean image.

The default for Image Manager is to automatically take a settings backup but I like to control things!

The only time I have used a usb in the last 2 years is to flash new bootloaders.

Hi,

OpenPLi also have a backup/restore process and no you don't need to flash by USB each time there is something new.

You can perform the online update but if you think that your box no longer behaves normally then try an USB flash.

You are referring to Pedro's 'Backup Suite'. That indeed has the option to restore/flash an image(backup), but not the option to download an image from the PLi-server.

So one has to manually download it, transfer it to a staorage medium attached to the STB and then use the suite to flash.

The beauty of this method of image flashing is that you don't get usb format issues or finger trouble, and the only delays in the process are really waiting for my brain, E2 to stop (initiated by flashing tool), the time it takes to flash using the flash tool and then reboot time.... which are receiver specific.

Even on my ET8500's it takes less than 3 minutes .... with the biggest delay my brain think time while I decide where I am flashing (OS1 or OS2)  ... would hate to lose last working image!

There have been some driver updates for the Xtrends.

When comparing images, compare those using same drivers. Otherwise you will associate benefit/loss to image, whereas real issue is/was drivers.

Latest ET10000 update is from a while back; PLi & ViX are using the same.
