My old and rather limited DS210j suddenly had a hickup (bad sector, it seems) after many years of service: developed a fault somewhere on an HDD and even though it was RAID1 - the other one had the same issue, without the bad sector but couldn't get it to work, even after reformatting, reinstallation etc. - so I can't see the point now with RAID 1 (the same stuff across two [or more?] HDDs, which were WD Green 2TB each and did hibernate, as I put it in both STBs, as well as Synology OS [and there is this option there, also]).

 

The Synology NAS is quiet, versatile (their SW offerings are generous, including Logitech's net radio server, house security CAMs etc.), it does give you many options and their GUI is great even for newbies, with a bit of patience and sometimes with many advanced fatures.

 

Thanx for other points about GigaBit capability - must watch out now, as I am also trying to buy...

 

I have a Fritz, too and it was behaving but it will be tested now, given the ever growing sizes and needed throughput for films/series... That's IF it gets used, since I will get a modem from the ISP provider.

 

I had an 8 NetGear port switch, connected by a LAN cable to the modem, which went to my multimedia setup, where almost everything was on the net (NAS, TV, STBs, multimedia players) or at least the home network... I could see my kids playing on my phone, in another room or when I had to go out (cool CAM job directly to the modem, not through the NAS - but NAS can also record it etc.) etc.

 

All in all, Device Manager mounting or fstab in our STBs - NFS simply worked like a charm!

 

Hopefully, I will soon set it all up, too...

 

Must buy NAS, HDDs, figure out the allocated modem (by the provider) or Fritz! if need be, then VPN it all, if at all possible (best to do it in the modem, if you can...)...

Otherwise, I had experience with SmartProxy VPN but I had to do it device by device, as Italian modem couldn't do it for all...

I'm also going to build a NAS.

I was thinking of getting a Synology as well (since all of my friends/colleages have it), but I ultimately decided to go for a DIY-project.

Reason for this is that I find it a bit expensive considering the hardware specs you get for the money (cpu-power / ram)

 

So this is the list I came up with:

 

Case :Fractal Design Node 304 Black - € 77

PSU: Seasonic G-series 360 watt - € 60
SSD for OS: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB - € 90

 

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1245 v5 80watt TDP - € 305
Mainboard: ASRock Rack C236 WSI - € 222
RAM: Crucial CT2K16G4WFD824A 32GB  (2x16GB) ECC - € 158

 

Total cost of the system (excluding disks):  € 912

The case fits up to 6 disks and has been reviewed positively by NAS builders.

The Xeon CPU is a bit expensive, reason for choosing it because it supports ECC memory (which is recommended when building a ZFS volume) and also features the Intel HD Graphics P530 gpu.

I'm going to use the GPU for experimenting with video-encoding using ffmpeg (vaapi).

 

So yes it's a but expensive due the fact I've chosen for Intel Xeon, ECC ram and a mini-itx mainboard which supports it, but I think in the long run I'll have a stable NAS with the ability to do some medium weight server tasks as well.

 

My OS of choice would be CentOS 7.x with the zfsonlinux repository enabled.

That looks like a great OS for my system.

But it looks like it runs on FreeBSD which I'm not really familiar with.

For example I'd like to build ffmpeg from scratch and utilize the intel gpu for encoding/decoding using vaapi, I'm not sure whether that's all possible on FreeBSD.

My Synology isn't exposed to the internet, why would I be so stupid?

The stuff I ordered arrived today.

Done nothing yet with the NAS.

 

But I stuck the switch (Linksys LGS108-EU) between the FritzBox and made all connections via the switch.

The network feels much more responsive now.

Also f.i instance copying a file between my PC and the ET-9500 is now at full whack for 100 mbit connection.  (PC is connected via a Gigabit line)

Previous the speed fluctuated.  Illustrating WanWizard's point that FritzBox internals are not that optimal.

I see your point with FreeBSD, to add to the list "Amahi" which is based on Fedora.

Why do you say that Synology (well protected, behind a HW firewall, a good password, specific permissions given to each user and to each folder) should not be connected to the internet?

 

Why would that be "stupid"?

Because the Synology software has known vulnerabilities, especially if you're not on top with your updates, there is ransomware out there that specifically targets Synlogoy boxes.

 

Besides that, I am a network and security guy, I don't expose anything onto the Internet, except the port of my VPN server. ;)

Semantics. ;)  Stupid in de sense that it is not a question of if something will happen, but when something will happen...

I had mine "online" for years and nothing happened. Nothing "bad"! Every precaution I already mentioned was in place, also an antivirus app in the NAS etc.

 

Stupid is not the same as uniformed. You should choose your words better!

Whatever. I am entitled to my opinion.

 

I find it stupid to connect any service to the internet without proper and professional protection, something you can hardly achieve at home. You not only need to be informed, you also need a lot of knowledge to do something with that information. And even then you need around-the-clock monitoring to prevent zero-day attacks.

 

If your house never burnt down before, you can't conclude from that, that it is save to cancel your house insurance because it will never happen.

I never cancelled any insurance in my NAS and nothing ever happened to it...

 

But as they say: "If you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they are not after you!" :D

Ransoware was a very old story that happens to people that don't handle and protect properly there NAS.

 

Synology promptly react and now the OS update is fully automatic and occurs quite often, you have got a mail 10 minutes before it happens to warm you that the Synology will update itself.

And indeed you don't need to compare the hardware spec, you also pay for a very efficient update and real support.

 

Moreover I have an old Synology and a newer one and both are still maintained and are still at the same software level. Of course the GUI speed is different.

 

Synology support is really good and there is wide community around them, they also listen to customer requests and add features when requested and the GUI is very simple and efficient.

 

Synology also provides many application for you mobile devices (Android & IOS) that perfectly works. I won't spend time to build my own PC based NAS anymore.
