Well, the topic starter just wants to use a specific USB tuner which is only supported in newer kernels.

IMHO (USB-)drivers can be the only reason to hunger for a new(er) kernel.

Yes，I think the newer kernel takes the only (most) advantage of supporting a specific USB tuner.

 

So, can we update the Linux media_tree separately ?  I saw the tutorial on Linuxtv website.

 

Is it feasible in Openpli ? Could you show me some detail steps please?

 

BTW:   I installed the dvb-usb-dw2102.ipk on my vu+ uno4k , after reboot , still no usb tuner (tevii S662) on the menu. Is this because of low kernel version, or incompatible with arm processor ?  I have a successful attempt on pi2B with Libreelec.

I would guess that would break the vendor's driver for the build in tuner too.

No, but it's a media driver as well.

If an ipk driver listed by pli feeds, then just install it and should not mention the minimum requirement of kernel ?

 

Is the ipk driver contains all matters needed ? moudles、 fw files and so on ?

Th STB's drivers are closed source and build against a specific kernel. This means it's not possible to update the kernel, unless/until the STB-manufacturer supplies drivers for that kernel.

In fact the same story as for the drivers for the USB-device.

If Debian and Ubuntu don't switch kernel in stable branches, they will definitely know why.

Uh, Ubuntu 15 was already on 3.19. Dunno about 16, should be 4.x then.

And contrary to the settops, these kernels get updates still. They usually get security patches, bugfixes and USB (wifi mostly) backports.

My Samsung smartphone is also using kernel 3.10.x, even with the latest firmware (October 2016).

Smartphones are notorious for using ancient kernels. That's probably related to the 12000 patches (yes, that's really twelve thousand) they applied to get the chipset to boot at all.

They just pretend to be upgrading things, but in fact, you just get whatever they happened to get the chipset to boot with. If you're unhappy about the drivers that we get for the settops, these phones need drivers for the $0.80 wifi chip, the gprs modem, video codec and more, and you can bet that they're mostly getting binary blobs too.

Yes and that is what I say, no more, no less. Are you reading SpaceRat?

 

But even better, simply don't use any USB devices that need drivers on a STB and you're all okay.
