Ho All,
Well, I have found a (temp?) workaround:
1. I deleted the BBC entries in my (own) bouquet and reloaded.
2. I made a new bouquet called BBC + ST. Here I loaded BBC1,2 and 4 HD (Vrij te ontvangen/free to air) from the channel list.
3. I loaded the first bouquet (that had the subtitels) with BBC1,2,and 4 HD from the list with BSkyB.
4. I saw no subtitels active after the reload on the original bouquet (which is what I wanted) 
5. On the BBC+ST, subtititels once activated and remain so. (Wife, who not native speaker) is now very happy.
6. On my original bouquet, subtitels remain deactivated and me happy! 
Note: as said before, all the language switches/options remain as OFF/NONE
So, when subtitles required - or not, simply switch to the desired bouquet.
All I ask is for whoever that does the programming is to provide an option in the subtitel (sub-)menu to disable it please!
The Teletext/DVB reversal I can live with if you know what to select.
