As a workaround for people who can't find a proper USB-stick: Install the BackupSuite and install a new version via the BackupSuite via the Blue button=Restore backup.

Just select the new image you want to flash and start the flash/restore procedure (even from the USB-stick which didn't want to flash it should work)

Never even thought of that possibility. That would even allow you to flash a box remotely, I was looking for that recently!

Yes. It uses my tool ofgwrite which you also can call from telnet. So no running e2 is needed.

I think we need to do something constructive with that in OpenPLi 5, it would solve a lot of hassle if we could re-introduce online updates, like in the E1 era...

How to do that? Mini-howto please ;)

My concern is that one is running off sectors/filesystem that are overwritten bij ofgwrite at that moment. Especially with ext4 that is dangerous, at least.

Hence my remark we have to look at it for OpenPLi 5, and come up with a "fool-proof" solution. For example (just a stab in the dark) move the image to a ramdisk?

Only short. Install ofgwrite package. Then unzip image to harddisk/NAS/USB stick/... Start flashing:
ofgwrite <path to image>
For options like flash only kernel see "ofgwrite -h".

The program unmounts root filesystem by using a ramdisk and pivot root(in very simply words). So no processes are running anymore accessing the root filesystem. Afterwards ubi boxes are flashed with builtin ubiformat and nandwrite. On ext4 boxes filesystem is mounted again. Ofgwrite then deletes all data and decompress roots.tar.bz2. As I mount the root filesystem on different mount point, I think it's not really dangerous. Then box is restarted.
VU+ boxes need unfortunately different procedure as you cannot unmount root filesystem. If you do, you need to stop parts of the VU+ drivers and then writing to framebuffer to show progress is veeeeerrrrrrryyyyyy slow.
But I also think in this case my program works quite well. Ofgwrite is used in other images for years without problems and some users use ofgwrite on regular(daily) basis. So it's quite well tested.

So you need external storage at the moment, that ramdisk is not used to temporarily store the image?

You can put the image everywhere except the root filesystem. So e.g. /tmp can be used. As several boxes have only little RAM, I would use another place to store the image. If RAM is full box will stop working. So better use USB stick or builtin harddisk or similar.

I get that, but that is not a factor you can could on being there. It it is there, it can be used as temporary storage if available, but what is the alternative if not?

I was thinking about something more user-friendly, for example the upload of an image via the webif, not unlike the way you would flash an nfi.

More user friendly are plugins like Pedros backup suite. In Openatv latest images from the website are visible. You can download and install them with your remote.

To have something similar like dream have, you'll need support from manufacturer. Not impossible, but yet not possible.

It's a little off topic here. I guess we should start new thread if you like to discuss this a little bit more.

Yes, please. I have a similar situation on my esp8266 boards, that can be flashed OTA, where I ended up dividing the flash in two and round-robin flashing one while running from the other half.

Quite a lot of embedded systems, like the OS of more modern Cisco routers and switches, also work this way. Some can even be upgraded this way without downtime. Juniper solved it differently, they have their forwarding logic in firmware, so they can upgrade and restart the system without any interruptions for packet forwarding.

Tried 6USB sticks, but not helped... For me the solution was to remove the ethernet, and (external HDD), from the back of the box. After that the 1.USB stick worked like a charm
