Dear OpenPLI Fans,

on my search for any potential support for HD Audio formats like Dolby Atmos and/or DTS:X I found your forum for your OpenPLI image.

Somehow it seems that the hardware can't decode it and therefore it would need to be soft-de-coded, isn't it ?

Is there any solution in sight or in the works i.e. any light at the end of the tunnel ?

Thank you in advance for any information, links or tips.

Best regards

   ;-)

Correct.

The SoC in the hardware we support are designed for STB usage, not for use in/as a mediaplayer. We don't have any control of what the SoC can or can't do (that is up to Broadcom) and what the SoC is or isn't licenced to do (which is up to the manufacturer of the hardware).

Having said that, the latest generation of SoC's, with a quad-core ARM CPU, probably won't have much of a problem with those audio formats, providing there is gstreamer support for those formats.

Question is if you want to fork out that much money, if all you need is a mediaplayer...

Currently in use: VU+ Duo 4K (2xFBC S2), VU+ Solo 4K (1xFBC S2), uClan Usytm 4K Pro (S2+T2), Octagon SF8008 (S2+T2), Zgemma H9.2H (S2+T2)

Due to my bad health, I will not be very active at times and may be slow to respond. I will not read the forum or PM on a regular basis.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

So the SoC does not support it. Why do all manufactorers not implement such a support ?

My usecase is to have ONE box that plays all. I don't care if it is SAT, ip or movies on my HDD nor NAS.

I have tried several hardware mediaplayers (Q10 pro, Nvidia shield Pro incl. Kodi etc.

They do play Atmos but have issues with some movies that even my Ultimo 4k plays...

I don't aim to switch devices based on the movie's video + audio format. One for all.

So, all I am missing is support for new Audio formats like mentioned.

Why can't you emulate it, if I may ask ?

"providing there is gstreamer support for those formats."

I guess this is what you try to say, i.e. it is simply not yet implemented ?!
If yes, is there anything in works ?

I understand what YOUR use case is, but the boxes are made as DVB STB's.

I would like to have my washing machine double as an MP3 player, but that isn't going to happen any time soon. ;)

gstreamer is an external open source development, you can check their website (https://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/) to see what is supported, what is being worked on, etc. Most mediaplayers use it under the hood, in one shape or form.

If you have an Ultimo 4K, you could make a full backup of it, install the latest OpenATV, and see what that does. They tend to use more bleeding-edge versions than we do, the next OpenPli will be released initially with gstreamer 1.8.3.

Any ETA for that ? Do you have any gossip to share if this will include any support towards the new audio formats ?

OpenATV does not seem to help neither ... Release is from Dec 2016.

Also tried VTI Image ...

No ETA, we're working on it, the plan is "soon".

OE-A 4.x based images (like OpenATV) use gstreamer 1.11 (so newer than we will start with) which is indeed from december last year. So don't expect any miracles from us, short term.
