Is there any Sat/Tv Box with OpenPli that can handle to transcode directly from the box with better quality that I can get now with my Vu+ Solo SE v2

Define "better quality"?

The transcoding functionality in all SoC's is pretty similar, and all can only transcode to SD. Driver and streamproxy support and stability for VU+ is a bit lacking compared to the likes of Xtrend or Mutant, but that doesn't give you better "quality".

Currently in use: VU+ Duo 4K (2xFBC S2), VU+ Solo 4K (1xFBC S2), uClan Usytm 4K Pro (S2+T2), Octagon SF8008 (S2+T2), Zgemma H9.2H (S2+T2)

Due to my bad health, I will not be very active at times and may be slow to respond. I will not read the forum or PM on a regular basis.

the picture quality when transcoding directly in the VU+ Solo SE v2 box is OK for watching on a smartphone, but awful quality for watching on a 50" or bigger screen.

For streaming, is best to either let like VLC transcode or get a tuner card to a PC and install things like mediaportal or tvendhead?

I don't have a Solo SE v2, so I can't say.

I use de transcoder in my HD2400 an ET10000 very often, via a VU Zero box in combination with the fallback tuner, when I travel (it sets up a VPN over wifi to home so I can watch TV in hotels. etc). And that is very acceptable, compared to regular SD, on normal TV's. You have to play a bit with the settings, I use 720p with 2Mbps. Note that on a VU+, you need to reboot if you change the settings, it can't handle changes or per-stream settings.

If you want HD transcoding, you need an external solution. A good one will be expensive, imho a bit overdone for personal use.

You do not need to reboot the box... you just stop/start the streamproxy... I'm investigating a method to autorestart this streamproxy

Would it not be better to get rid of that crappy VU+ streamproxy binary?

This is not entirely correct. Duo2 and the 4K boxes offer different resolutions and higher bitrates so there is quite a big difference.

I don't have a 4K box, so I can't comment.

Even the et10k can transcode to 720p... but still the transcode is meant to compress the picture further to be able to stream it from home to elsewhere so I purpose having it in hd is not a real priority...

Okay, a lot of nonsense here.

- none of receivers we support and make an image for, ship with the crappy VU+ transtreamproxy, so that is irrelevant

- all receivers that support transcoding come with the streamproxy, which gives a universal interface

- the receivers that support native "enigma" transcoding come with both the streamproxy and the native interface

- using the native "enigma" transcoding interface and also using the streamproxy interface one can request several parameters for the stream, amongst others the bitrate and the resolution

- if one wants to change one of these parameters, one needs to terminate the stream and set it up again, simply because http only allow url "get" parameters during the setup of a request, this is not necessarily a restriction of the receiver

- it is NEVER required to reboot the receiver to change streaming parameters, that's ridiculous

- the VU+ solo2 and the VU+ solose don't have hardware support for transcoding and that is why the quality is far less than the other receivers, that support transcoding in hardware.

The last one is the also the answer to the original question of the TS.

Hi mates, I have always thought transcode must be done outside of engima2 box, not to burn the limited box hardware, better on a powerful pc with linux distro. I will publish a wiki on openpli website, to get channels from openwebif and import them to tvheadend. Once there, on tvheadend in a powerful pc with ubuntu, yo can work them better and no limitations. On the other side, we are all with fast internet, 300/300 mb, but there are some people with still 10mb/100kb. In this case it is comprehensible, I dont know in europe, I talk about spain. So, I am going to write the wiki and will publish here, maybe it will be useful.

If you have a box that has hardware support for transcoding, you would hardly notice it on the box (it is the SoC doing it, not the CPU).

It is imho a bit pointless to have a powerful PC running 24/7 if all you want is watch some TV on the go...

Ok, I just wanted to give some other ideas. Some boxes have got transcoding by software... so there are lots of useless tools if you only want to see TV, and only you, nobody else....thats true.

Wiki built by me and named by WanWizard, I was unable to give a name to the wiki....

Look for TVHeadend on openpli Wiki.

That does not mean, btw, that you can use/implement/start/install transcoding on any odd receiver. Transcoding can only be done where the SoC supports it (see our comparison chart).

Yes, the box, by itself, cannot give us too many features, just to make a channel output, so I think is better to work the resources out of the box. sorry for my english...
