I am deciding whether to get 3.5 or 2.5" hdd for my receiver that is passively cooled and has no fans. From what I understand 3.5" radiate more heat, but I don't know how significant the difference is. Obvious advantage of 3.5" is larger hdd for the same money.
Appreciate if someone can share their thoughts or experiences.

2.5" very quiet.

In terms of heat is is significant as well. I could always feel the heat from the disk on the outside of the box, I can't with a 2.5" disk.

A 2.5" SSD has almost no heating and more important it's noiseless.

But is quite a bit more expensive. While the box has absolutely no use for the speed of an SSD disk.

Recommended buy is a 5400 rpm 2.5 inch disk. Completely silent, cheap, lots of capacity.
No 2.5" disk is completely silent ... maybe you don't hear it... but I can...

I would like at least 1TB, preferably 2TB, so SSD is way out of my budget unfortunately.
I've been researching a bit since asking the question and I'm getting conflicting information whether 2.5" hdds are consistently quieter and use less power (which is obviously directly heat to the amount of heat they generated).
What would be good quiet models with low power consumption? 1 or 2TB

There are also dedicated PVR 3.5" HDDs; they work on approx 5400RPM, and have the same heat and noise performance as 2.5" HDDs, but are less expensive.
I've been using them in several boxes and never had any heat /noise issue.
Having said that: 2.5" HDDs are becoming less and less expensive.

An advantage of 2.5" disks is that they are more widely available than 3.5" PVR-HDDs. On the opposite side there are quite number of 2.5" HDDs that are not as silent as they're supposed to be. I think you should (find &) read the manufacturers specs and reviews.
